Should Have Been Spiral Bound!! (And Other Production Errors)
By S. Fine
This is a gorgeous book, no question. Emily Martin is a great illustrator and this book is full of beautiful, funky, weird, fun eye candy. I'd be happy to give it 4 or 5 stars as an adult art book. However, if I were rating it as paper doll book, an activity book, or even as a "craft book", I'd be giving it 1 or 2 starts. Note: This book is not for kids - at least in it's present form - it would frustrate and sadden any child when s/he realizes how useless it is as a toy. I'm splitting my vote and giving it 3 stars. Here's why:

The introduction immediately addresses the problem with all beautiful paper dolls - to cut or not to cut. The author recommends making color copies of the pages which *might* make sense (see below) if one could open the book flat enough to make copies without breaking the binding! The only truly satisfying way to enjoy this book as it is would be to buy 3 copies of the book: one to leave alone and enjoy as an intact art book, one to carefully dismantle the binding and cut out half the dolls, and a third to dismantle and cut out the other half of the dolls. I love the book, but not enough to buy 3 copies!

The problems with this book (I hate to gripe, but I'd love to see a new, improved edition of this book!):

* The book should have been spiral-bound and the pages perforated!! This is a no-brainer whether the reader wants to cut the book pages or make copies. Since the author recommends cutting the book or color-copying the pages (see the problem with this suggestion below) the book should be designed to make that possible!

* The suggestion to color-copy all of the pages is either naive or indifferent to the cost of color copies (especially on card stock). Most likely it would be cheaper to buy a second and third copy of the book.

* The pages with the dolls are printed on both sides! They did arrange the pages so that each doll could be cut out by alternating the half of the page with dolls, but the other half of each of these pages contains important text such descriptions and biographies of the dolls and instructions for the dolls that need additional drawing and coloring by the reader as well as illustrations. If you cut a doll out of one half page you destroy the text description and illustrations on the other side!

* I don't understand why the publishers decided to print the 17 (double-sided, *sigh*) pages of dolls on heavier stock that is not heavy enough to allow the dolls to stand on their own. What a waste of paper!

* The dolls don't have wide enough stands at the bottom, or notches, or strips to be folded in half to make a stand. These dolls won't stand on their own! Stands are a basic feature of paper dolls that is missing here. (One could creatively cut wider bases rather than following the lines and make strips for stands out of cardstock, but then one risks cutting into the doll(s) on the back of the page, as well as the important text described above.)

* The wigs on pages 121 & 127 don't have tabs. Many of the objects are missing tabs. I haven't cut out anything from the book yet, so I can't say whether the clothes fit properly (if anyone knows, please reply and comment). As far as I can tell, the "Bonus Doll" on the back flap (which, ironically, is the only doll that is on heavy-enough stock and has nothing on the back to destroy) has no clothes included.

To sum up, this is a lovely book to look through but completely frustratiing as an activity book. Again, it is not for children - it would be cruel to give this book to a child, who would get excited about cutting out the dolls and be completely frustrated and disappointed!

Amazing doesn't begin to describe this book!
By M. Miller
I just got this in the mail this morning and love it even more than I was expecting. As a lifelong paperdoll lover, I'm still in happy awe that a book like this was even made -- it really is absolutely delightful from cover to cover. All the finished paperdolls are creative and unique (and adorable, obviously). The customizable ones are so fabulous I can't wait to make our 'family portrait!' In fact, I'm seriously contemplating getting another copy to keep 'in tact' while I cut up this copy, it's just that much beautiful fun.

The projects that are for the paper dolls -- a stage, armoire, etc.-- also look great. I'm envisioning many lovely hours spent with my daughter this thanksgiving and Christmas vacation. She was my excuse to buy this book, but really I would have bought it anyway! Thank you Emily!

Charming and Imaginative
By Clevelander83
When I saw Emily Martin's The Black Apple's Paper Doll Primer, I was instantly transported back to my childhood. Emily is a #1 handmade seller on Etsy.com and her shop, The Black Apple, enjoys quite a following. She's now bringing her creativity to the Paper Doll Primer book, which is chock full of dolls, clothes, craft projects, scrapbooking tips, and much more!

The Black Apple's Paper Doll Primer starts out with 20 characters created by Emily, each complete with a back story to spark one's imagination. There's the adorable Cora in a sailor dress who enjoys "looking over the night ocean", the woodsman Henry who "prefers honey to syrup", and many more. Following the characters is a section with hundreds of paper outfits that correspond to each doll. Emily notes that all "beautiful things are made to be used" and in the case of her dolls, cut out and played with, but I just couldn't bring myself to cut into the beautifully illustrated pages!

Emily also provides instructions (and drawings) for building back drops and scenes for the paper dolls, creating an armoire for their clothes and mounting the dolls onto Popsicle sticks or stands for easier use. My favorite part of the Paper Doll Primer are the 16 customizable dolls on card stock that can be made to resemble anyone, including the owner of the book.

The Black Apple's Paper Doll Primer is too charming for words and will provide endless entertainment for an imaginative youngster...or an adult who wants to play along!

The Sermon on the Mount: An Exposition, by James Montgomery Boice

To read the "Sermon on the Mount" usually leads a person to one of two conclusions: 1) that the type of life that is suggested by Christ's words is so tremendously impossible it should simply be put out of one's mind, or 2) that the teachings are tremendous and should be practices--but it is not necessary to make any personal commitment to the One who spoke the words. Dr. Boice carefully and clearly points out the folly of either of these positions. Faith in Jesus Christ is a basic prerequisite to practicing the Beatitudes--and that faith makes their practice not only possible, but enjoyable. Thus, the author has created an all-encompassing work for scholar, pastor, college or Bible school student, and perfect for the local Bible study group. This work has become as standard in the effort of overcoming Christian ethical deficiency and exhortation to the high standard of Christian commitment and conduct.

Boice never disappoints. His theology is sound, his methods unsurpassed. This brilliant theologian clearly delineates the complex and profound in a straightforward, revelatory, applicable manner. Underlying Boice's understanding and interpretation of Scripture is also his extensive research and unique conclusions based entirely on text, context, historical and cultural observations. Also recommended are authors, professors, theologians RC Sproul and Wayne Gruden.

Praise for Heart Wide Open

“Heart Wide Open will fuel your desire for a deeper relationship with God and give you the gentle nudge and the steps to get it. So much of this book spoke to me that I had to get out my highlighter pen! Wherever you are in your faith, you will benefit from reading of Shellie’s journey to a deeper, stronger, more intimate relationship with our Creator. She tells it like it is, with love, good humor, and abandon, as she writes out of an honest and open love for God, for His Word, and for you! With every word you read, you can sense her excitement as she went through this journey, and it will tug on your heart, calling you to join her in falling in love with Jesus all over again.”
—Korie Robertson of A&E’s Duck Dynasty

“Shellie Rushing Tomlinson writes with wit, wisdom, and plain-spoken truth. She throws open the doors and calls women to step into a deeper, wider, more soul-fulfilling love for Scripture, for themselves, and for the Lord. Heart Wide Open reads like a conversation with a best girlfriend and a wise mentor, all in one.”
—Lisa Wingate, national best-selling author of The Prayer Box

“Fans who love Shellie for her fabulous sense of humor will have their hearts warmed by her emotional vulnerability in these pages. She dives deep into her personal faith journey, sharing her own search for a genuine relationship with Christ. For everyone who longs to have an intimate bond with their Savior, this book will teach you to live with your heart wide open.”
—Julie Cantrell, New York Times best-selling author of Into the Free

“In Heart Wide Open, Shellie Tomlinson shares the beauty of her heart and the journey she took to trade a mundane faith for the abundant life with Jesus we have all been invited to. She does it in her southern and inviting way, wrapped up in her gift of storytelling, while still challenging the reader’s heart to dive into the deep topics of our obedience, prayer, and courage.”
—Denise Hildreth Jones, author of Reclaiming Your Heart

“I know two things about Shellie Tomlinson without question: she is an incredibly gifted storyteller with a sense of humor that never fails to save me from despair, and she is a true woman of deep and abiding faith. What I didn’t know until now is that she is able to use both those qualities to teach us how to embrace an intimate relationship with God. In Heart Wide Open she has made me laugh aloud one moment and then be moved with the wisdom of her words at the next line. Shellie shows us how to take the two great commandments—to love God with all our hearts and to love our neighbors as ourselves—and integrate those things into the perfume of our everyday lives. Regardless of how long you have been on your faith journey, you will discover wisdom in these pages that will draw you closer to God and show you how to love His people with more patience. And, my friends, at the close of the day that is what it’s all about.”
—River Jordan, author of Praying for Strangers

“This book pushes me to be more vulnerable to the Father who loves me more than my own family—and that’s a lot. How wonderful to know that God not only loves us for who we are, but that He created us the way He wants us. He wants us to pour our lives out to Him to glorify Him. Thank you, Shellie, for encouraging us all through this book to draw closer to our God and to keep our hearts wide open to all the possibilities He has for us!”
—Missy Robertson of A&E’s Duck Dynasty

“So many of us have a longing for more in our Christian lives. In Heart Wide Open, Shellie Rushing Tomlinson fans this flame within us as she points our hearts toward a life of joy, excitement, and wonder in God. Her words will wrap around you like a hug, and you’ll find yourself being equipped to engage in your daily relationship with the Lord like never before.”
—Lisa Bevere, best-selling author of Girls with Swords and Lioness Arising

I recommend this book to all who want to draw closer to Jesus. Her questions for Bible study are thought provoking and ripe for discussions. I have no doubt this study will strike a chord for many and be a great tool for personal spiritual growth.”
—Pamela Gregg Foxworthy, wife of comedian Jeff Foxworthy

“I love Shellie Tomlinson’s humor, but it’s her heart that I most want to listen to. I’m so glad she’s chosen to share it in Heart Wide Open. This is the book I’ve wanted her to write, filled with her unique blend of realness and wisdom.”
—Marybeth Whalen, author of The Bridge Tender and cofounder of She Reads

“This is a charming, funny, honest, touching look at one southern woman’s journey to a profound relationship with Christ. As the title suggests, Shellie lives with her heart wide open to the questions, the mysteries, and the certainties of our faith. You will love this book!”
—Sheila Walsh, author of The Storm Inside

“Shellie Rushing Tomlinson gets to the heart of everyday faith in Heart Wide Open with her signature storytelling and wit, opening her own heart to share about learning to walk with God. Her use of life lessons mingled with Scripture is sure to capture the heart of every believer and every seeking soul.”
—Rachel Hauck, award-winning author of Once Upon a Prince

“My Kentucky mamaw told me I was ‘as handy as a pocket in a shirt.’ Southern women just know how to turn a phrase and a head, which is why you won’t want to miss Shellie’s down-home, upbeat take on life, seen through cool drafts of sweet tea and sass. My favorite way to learn is to laugh myself sane. Thanks, Shellie.”

l like to say I was in church nine months before I was born and shortly thereafter my people began toting me back to the Lord’s house as quickly and as often as they could. I now understand there are worse places to grow up than the left side, second row of a small country church, but as a rambunctious kid with a serious imagination and a bad case of the fidgets, I had a hard time imagining why so much churchgoing was necessary.

It seemed highly unlikely we would miss out on anything earth shattering if we skipped a service here and there. Even a wiggly little tomboy with smudged eyeglasses could tell you who was going to come in late, who was going to make a scene taking her baby to the nursery, and which elderly deacon was going to rouse himself from a brief nap to offer a hearty “Amen!” People are creatures of habit even—and maybe especially—in the Lord’s house.

To my way of thinking, a little absence could have made our muchchurched hearts grow even fonder. My sisters concurred. Had this ever come to a vote, we girls would have ruled the day with a three-to-two tally, but our parents weren’t the least bit interested in running a democracy.

Our list of required appearances included, but was not limited to, Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night, two-week vacation Bible schools in the summer, and two-week annual revivals in the spring and fall, both revivals having been prefaced with two-week cottage prayer meetings in anticipation of the big events. Sickness could get you an excused absence from any of these services, but it had to be verified. Holding a thermometer inside your electric blanket so you could stay home on Sunday night and watch The Wonderful World of Disney never worked. Not that I ever tried.

As a child, I enjoyed the rhythm of familiar hymns as well as the sense of belonging I felt inside those church walls, even if I firmly believed we overdid the whole attendance thing. As a teenager, however, I became increasingly skilled at being present in body alone while my thoughts were occupied elsewhere with my peers and our many dramas. I had a healthy respect for the teachings of the church, and God seemed real enough to me while I was there, but I didn’t understand why my faith felt so compartmentalized. Where God went once I left the church building I couldn’t say. And honestly, I wasn’t all that concerned with the mystery.

This disconnect between my Sunday morning faith and my everyday experience followed me into my young married life where, despite my childhood conclusion that our parents overdid the churching, I found myself choosing the same level of commitment to the weekly services. I still enjoyed attending church, but I could seldom carry the warm fuzzies I felt during the service any farther than the parking lot before my sense of God’s presence began to fade. The Sundays that bookended my weeks seemed to have little to do with what happened in the days that lay between them. As the years rolled by, I gradually began to wonder why this was and if it had to be.

Thankfully, the day finally came when I was ready to admit that I needed something more. I had no clue what it was that had been missing for so long, yet I knew I had to find it.

As it happens, God used my own children to turn the heat up under my growing desire for more. I was a married woman with a loving husband trying to raise two young teenagers when the persistent dissatisfaction I’d never been able to name began to reach a boiling point.

During my kids’ early years, I’d been able to pull off the church-lady gig, or at least my concept of the role. I knew the Bible and I knew the rules. Thinking this would be enough, I forged ahead, confident that if my husband and I took our children to church every time the doors opened, just as my parents had done with my sisters and me, all would be well. And for the most part it was—until they hit adolescence and I came down with mommy terrors!

My babies were growing up, and it was both exhilarating and terrifying. Everywhere I turned the culture around us was laughing at what I considered sacred and celebrating what I found immoral. Increasingly our kids were exposed to things outside our home that neither their dad nor I approved of, and it frightened me to realize the temptations they faced could potentially wreck the futures we had always dreamed of for them. I tried to placate myself. We had taught them our values. If they were strong in their faith, they would be okay come what may, right? I had already purchased this holy life insurance myself, hadn’t I? I simply needed to make sure they had taken out
a similar policy. I needed to know they believed me when I said that the fullest life was one lived in God.

Such logic should have brought peace, and it would have, if not for one overgrown, peanut-eating elephant loafing smack-dab in the middle of my living room: I had zero life experience to offer as evidence for what I was advertising. As much as I disliked admitting it, any spiritual direction I was offering my kids came strictly from the biblical head knowledge gained through my years in the pew. I was merely regurgitating what I’d heard my whole life.

In short, I was a hypocrite!

Though the news came as quite a surprise to me, the ugly truth was undeniable. An Internet dictionary offers the following spot-on definition of my true state in that telling moment: a hypocrite is “a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.”1 Bingo. If I were to be honest, the faith I was experiencing wasn’t satisfying my deepest longings at all. My picture could’ve been pasted right beside that entry. Say “cheese,” Church Lady.

Even as I came face to face with the realization that I couldn’t pass on something I didn’t have, I was also painfully aware that young people are like mini lie detectors, capable of spotting anything short of the whole truth and willing to call you on it. I’m reminded of the time I came through the living room all dressed up for a big event, whereupon my grade school son looked up and announced, “Wow, Mama. You do not look fat in those pants.” Obviously, Phillip had heard this subject discussed in his few short years on earth, and, just as clearly, there had been other times when I had looked fat in my pants. But enough of What Not to Wear. My point is, children can
sniff out insincerity like a bloodhound and see through hypocrites with their eyes closed. My Big Faith Advertisement must have sounded as weak in their ears as it did in mine.

This sobering realization about the lameness of my own faith stared me down without blinking and prompted some serious soul searching. Why wasn’t my faith satisfying? Why was it that my God and I were friendly acquaintances at best? Why didn’t I know this One I called my Savior? Worse yet, why didn’t I love Him? Oh, I liked Him well enough. I appreciated the gospel, and I was grateful for the promise of a secure eternity, but love this Jesus in the here and now? Not really. In light of all my years of churching and being churched, I wondered how on earth that could be true. And why did some people seem so passionate about Jesus then all I could muster for Him on my most spiritual day was a healthy respect?

I knew people who talked about Jesus with the kind of affection normally reserved for a flesh-and-blood person. Me? I could sing “Oh, how I love Jesus” as heartily as everyone around me (albeit off-key), but deep down I knew that I could just as easily be singing “Oh, how I love watermelon” for all the fervency in my aching faking heart. My fellow southerners and I have a saying we’re fond of using to encourage someone to be honest. “Tell the truth and stay in church,” we’ll warn. I’ve always thought the line was funny, but I wasn’t laughing as I compared my empty profession of love with the words of Jesus Himself in Mark 12:30: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (niv). I knew I didn’t love Him that way, and I didn’t have the slightest idea what to do about it. Coming clean with my Jesus-loving church members about the state of my faith didn’t sound at all appealing.

Have mercy! If this is all I had to advertise for my abundant life, I realized I was going to have a hard time selling God to my kids, or to anyone else for that matter.

Flypaper Faith

With that, the nagging concern over my lackluster faith that had dogged me for years became a desperate need to find out what I was missing. I was no longer willing to settle for the distance that separated me from the God I’d heard about and prayed to from my earliest memory. I think of that turning point as my Flypaper Epiphany.

When I was growing up, most everyone I knew used flypaper to combat the bothersome insects that populate our southern summers. Flypaper seems to have lost its appeal over the years. But back in the day, these sticky pieces of vertical yellow tape, each about a foot and a half long and a couple inches wide, hung beneath carports all over our Louisiana Delta and as near as possible to the main entrances of our houses.

Flypaper is coated with sweet-smelling glue and designed to be so sticky that should a pesky fly encounter it while heading into the house, said insect would be immediately detained and permanently affixed to its surface. I can assure you that flypaper lives up to the billing. I once got my hair caught on the stuff, and I thought for sure Mama was going to have to shave me baldheaded to remove it from my crowning glory.

Eternal life isn’t a gift from God; eternal life is the gift of God.
—Oswald Chambers

I don’t remember the exact day I sat staring at John 17:3 (I do know it was shortly after I identified myself as a hypocrite), but I’ll always remember the challenge I heard in Jesus’s own words: “This is eternal life, that they might know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” That scripture was familiar to this church girl, but the hope I heard in it was brand spanking new. For the first time I saw in those words a way to get off the spiritual merry-go-round I’d been riding my whole life and strike out on the biggest adventure of all time: to actually know God. I saw this as the way I would learn to love Jesus, to crazy love Him.

In my new plan God was the flypaper, and I would be the fly. The mission: to throw myself at Him and stick for eternity! The rest of my life began with a single prayer and an honest admission that surprised neither of us:

“I admit it. I don’t love You like I should, but I want to love You. Help!”

Choosing to Love Jesus

I finally admitted that I had nothing to offer God. Zero. Zip. All I could bring was my weak, broken want-to. Here’s the beautiful reality: it was enough. If you want to love Jesus, it’s enough for you too!

The embarrassing truth I had avoided all my life—that I didn’t really love Jesus—was the very admission He would use to ignite my lukewarm heart. Who knew?! All I had to offer was a desire to love Him, but it was enough. Okay, to be accurate, I couldn’t even say that I wanted to love Him. It was more like I wanted to want to love Him, and still it was enough. He accepted my passionless heart and began to breathe on it, and a new way of living began opening to me.

I’ve had so many women tell me personal stories about their faith, and I’m always struck by how similar they are to my own. These sincere believers believe in God and they’re trying to follow Him, but they admit to having little to no sense of intimacy with Him. They long for the passion they see in the Bible, but they’re resigned to going through the motions without it. If this resonates with you, if you’ve been trying to ignore a certain dullness to your faith, please hear me. You aren’t asking for anything that God doesn’t want you to enjoy and Jesus didn’t die to give you! I’m walking proof that you can fall in love with Jesus by learning to whisper a simple prayer that meets
with His wholehearted approval: “I don’t love You, but I want to love You. Help me!”

Taste the sugar-sweet words of Ephesians 1:3–4: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world.”

God chose to love all of us, but He gave us free will to decide whether or not we would return that love. The type of honest prayer I’m advocating means admitting that our want-to is broken and asking God to teach us how to love Him well.

Have you been waiting for your heart to spontaneously combust into love for Jesus? If so, you have your cart before your horse, and I’m here to testify through firsthand experience that it’s a frustrating way to ride and produces scant forward progress. In 1 John 4:19 we’re told that “we love, because He first loved us.” In other words, you and I will never be able to bear down and deliver a passionate heart for God out of determination or selfdiscipline, and it won’t overtake us by surprise. It will, however, ignite in our hearts when we discover the secret of feasting on God’s love in the person of Jesus Christ. Scripture assures us that He loves us not because of who we are but because of who He is.

But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:4–7)

God put His love on eternal display by sending Jesus to save us, not because of our merit but in spite of our sin. He initiates the love affair with us.

The blessed challenge is to continue drinking that love in as freely as when we first reached for salvation. When we feast on this extravagant love and the many gifts He poured out upon us through Jesus Christ, we receive a nutrientrich meal that nourishes His passion in us. But I reiterate, it is a decision, just as surely as the one we make when we pull our chairs up to the dining room table. No one can make this choice for us.

So what does this decision look like? That’s the question I’m excited about answering. Let’s begin with some powerful words from Jesus, recorded in Matthew.

Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (6:19–21, hcsb)

For the longest time I allowed the good news of this passage to be totally eclipsed by the last sentence: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” That sounded like something of a spiritual inkblot test to me, and it was one I was sure I could never pass. I was quite convinced that if God examined what it was I treasured, He would see that He wasn’t at the top of the list. In my guilt-induced anxiety, I completely missed the clear directive of the passage. These six power-packed words turned my perceived inkblot test on its head when I finally understood their decree: “Collect for yourselves treasures in heaven.” That, my friend, isn’t a question or a suggestion. It’s an instruction that begs a proactive, determined choice of action. It’s also good news, foot-stomping good news. You and I get to choose what we treasure!

This power-packed privilege of choosing God as my treasure is the very decision I made on the day of my Flypaper Epiphany! I’ve since come to better understand the paradigm shift that occurred that day, but at the time I had no idea of the magnitude of my newly adjusted aim. I couldn’t have known that the decision to toss aside all reserve and throw myself at God with the sole goal of coming to know Him would not only open the door to the passion I was missing but also rescue me from another of my persistent struggles.

Leaving behind "just enough Jesus" for "Knock Your Socks Off Jesus"!!!
By Grammy JJ
I’ve been so blessed to be able to read Shellie Rushing Tomlinson’s book, "Heart Wide Open, Trading Mundane Faith For An Exuberant Life With Jesus". I’m a huge fan of all Shellie’s work. Her sense of humor and openness make her a favorite author. However, this book is different, the same...but better.

I was, as Shellie says, well “churched” growing up; I know all the stories, the hymns, the do’s and don’ts, and I’ve never strayed far from the expected path. I thought I had a great relationship with Jesus. I memorized a lot of bible verses, had a pretty good amount of faith, and truly wanted to do what I thought was right. But I had issues with grace. If I had to be really honest, it was a hard concept for me to grasp that that I didn’t have to “be good” to “be saved, and stay saved”.

This is where Heart Wide Open really spoke to me. I read the entire book all the way through, underlining passages that spoke to me as I went. Once I finished, I started again – this time I’m taking it one chapter at a time, using the study guide in the back for each chapter. I’m telling you – I’m rejoicing with each paragraph, learning to truly love Him and let him Love me as He intended! I’m also learning to LOVE his word. No longer is reading my Bible an obligation, but in asking Him to help me love and appreciate His word, I’m finding it is a direct message to ME.

Don’t take my word for it (and I know this is an awkward review – but I’m too full of inspiration and joy to complete a coherent sentence) – just get the book and read it for yourself. You won’t be sorry! In fact, do what I did – get 2 copies, 1 for yourself and 1 for someone else. Pass along this blessing!

Learning to Rest in Christ!
By Todd Stewart
As someone who has a Pastors heart, the truths found in this book energize me tremendously! I spend the majority of my time encouraging believers and challenging them to live the "abundant life" in Christ. The difficulty here is that so many people are caught in the religion trap in America. This book serves as a conduit to relationship over religion! Shellie is gifted with the ability to communicate life changing truths in a humorous way that challenge each of us to go deeper in our walk with Jesus! I have handed this book out to women of all ages and continue to get heart-warming feedback about how God is using the book to draw them closer to Jesus! If you want to get off the check-list bandwagon and rest in Christ, buy the book! I will be ordering more shortly to hand out!

a great choice for help in drawing closer to God's heart for you
By Crissy Hope
The subtitle of this book captures its theme: Trading mundane faith for an exuberant life with Jesus. The author accomplishes her mission of showing how to stop struggling in spending time with God and instead pursue an intimate friendship with Him based on His unrelenting love for us. She shares her own story of outgrowing a lackluster faith and learning to lean into God’s grace. She illustrates her teaching with her own life lessons in each chapter detailing how believers tend to settle for less than an authentic walk with Jesus. Her writing overflows with Southern humor and just the right amount of enthusiasm that kept me interested in reading from cover to cover. It’s rare that I pick up a book by an author I am unfamiliar with, but I would welcome reading more of hers. A key thread throughout each chapter is to recognize and rest in the reality that we can only love God because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). I was impressed at how seamlessly she wove relevant Scripture verses throughout the entire book, in fact on almost every page, and this spoke volumes of truth to my heart. It is good to be reminded that the Bible portrays a God who beckons us to come to Him only on the basis of faith in His promises, not on our ability to muster up anything good on our own. That is a real relief for those who want to love Jesus more but the feeling just isn’t always there. Heart Wide Open was written to guide us into the genuinely close connection with Him that we were created for, and I would highly recommend it for women who wish for a more fulfilling spiritual life.

delightful! and not at all heavy-handed
By lizafred
this book is a real treat. it's not only an imaginative journey about things that might have happened during those 40 days on the ark, but it has a sweet sense of humor and buried layers of meaning. the ten stories it tells in its chapters are actually all retellings of other bible stories (all old testament, so the book is appropriate for jews and christians alike) -- so there's a skunk named samson with special powers that delilah figures out, a polar bear named abraham who's told to go to a place he does not know, etc. its lessons are very universal, so -- as long as the reader is someone with a basic belief in the judeochristian interpretation of God -- it's completely enjoyable w/o feeling like you're sitting down for a bible lesson.

Loved by kids and parents - creative refresh of the traditional bible story
By DreamerGirl
As a parent, I appreciate the depth of creativity and object lessons that help my child learn while REALLY enjoying the story. Each chapter is told from the point of view of an animal on the ark. Most animals are recast to share traits with iconic individuals from traditional bible stories in an utterly clever style (i.e. Adam and Eve are doves that become the first beings to enter the post-flood world). The end of each chapter hints at the next story. Sometimes my child is so intrigued that he just has to take a peek at the next chapter before going to sleep.

On a practical note, the stories are a bit long and have lots of words, but it's just the right level for my child right now. Though I do find myself wishing there were more illustrations as several pages are almost all words. Also, the large font is a good size for tired parents. Hoping to find more books from the same author refreshing the traditional bible stories.

About the Author
In 1944, a country vicar, the Reverend W Awdry, wrote the stories he had been telling his two young sons about a group of engines with very recognizable personalities. In 1945, the first book featuring Thomas and the other Really Useful Engines was published, and in the 60 years since, the tales of these friendly engines have become beloved classics around the world.

"From the Trade Paperback edition."

In the early 1940s, a loving father crafted a small, blue, wooden engine for his son, Christopher. The stories that this father, the Reverend W. Awdry, made up to accompany this wonderful toy were first published in 1945. He continued to create new adventures and characters until 1972 when he retired from writing. Reverend W Awdry died in 1997 at age 85.

Just Terrible
By Jess S
I feel like I may be being overcritical of this book, but this is by far the worst children's book that I've read.

Part of that is the story. The dilemma in this book is that they need eggs to hide and they're at the docks. Easter will be ruined unless the trains deliver the eggs. And so the trains deliver them and the day is saved. Perhaps I'm asking for too much from a children's book, but this plot is beyond lazy. It's on par with "Christmas will be ruined if Santa just doesn't bother to deliver the presents. Oh, wait, he did deliver them. Christmas is saved!"

These feelings toward the story are complimented by the glitter. The glitter is distributed across the page as if after making the first pass at covering the pages, some manager came in and said there had to be more glitter. And then after that they came back and demanded even more glitter. And so on, until there are glitter blobs on the page for seemingly no reason what-so-ever.

Overall the book feels like a very poor effort, and is not something I would look forward to reading on a regular basis. Fortunately, the kid's reaction to it wasn't too hot either. When it was a new book, he asked for it a couple times, but it's lived a dusty life on the shelf ever since then.

There are much better Thomas the Tank Engine books out there, so don't bother with this one unless you or your kid are really, really into glitter.

The glittery nothingness of Thomas

Let's just say that one star is a generous review for this book. Although admittedly my toddler enjoys looking at the book, I prefer to hide it, because I can't stand it--and I'm not all that picky. The quality of the writing and language is atrocious, as if it were some mediocre high school slacker's english essay written one hour before the class' deadline. The plot makes little sense, isn't amusing, and has no lesson, no joy, nothing to discuss. It's an empty tale of glittery nothingness.

A Light That Never Goes Out: The Enduring Saga of the Smiths, by Tony Fletcher

The definitive book about The Smiths, one of the most beloved, respected, and storied indie rock bands in music history.

They were, their fans believe, the best band in the world. Hailing from Manchester, England, The Smiths--Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, and Mike Joyce--were critical and popular favorites throughout their mid-1980s heyday and beyond. To this day, due to their unforgettable songs and lyrics, they are considered one of the greatest British rock groups of all time--up there with the Beatles, the Stones, the Who, and the Clash.

Tony Fletcher paints a vivid portrait of the fascinating personalities within the group: Morrissey, the witty, literate lead singer whose loner personality and complex lyrics made him an icon for teenagers who felt forlorn and forgotten; his songwriting partner Marr, the gregarious guitarist who became a rock god for a generation of indie kids; and the talented, good-looking rhythm section duo of bassist Rourke and drummer Joyce. Despite the band's tragic breakup at the height of their success, A Light That Never Goes Out is a celebration: the saga of four working-class kids from a northern English city who come together despite contrasting personalities, find a musical bond, inspire a fanatical following, and leave a legacy that changed the music world--and the lives of their fans.

Amazon.com Review
Q&A with Tony Fletcher

Q. How did the project come about?

A. For starters, I was a fan and a contemporary; I’m the same age as Johnny Marr, Mike Joyce, and Andy Rourke. (Morrissey is approximately five years older.) But primarily, it was because the only other biography on The Smiths had been published back in 1992. Somewhere between the benefit of two additional decades of hindsight, the public’s ongoing fascination for the group, and my own passion for their music, it seemed like time their tale was told. Or that I told the tale. Or both.

Q. You were granted more detailed interviews with more key players, and were loaned or provided access to more letters, company memos, and contracts than any previous author or journalist writing about The Smiths. Describe your experience.

A. I had come of age, as a teenage fanzine editor, alongside many of the key players at the group’s record company, Rough Trade. I’ve long known many of the musicians, producers, and businesspeople associated with The Smiths, on both sides of the Atlantic. I’d conducted Morrissey’s first television interview back in January 1984, and my old magazine (Jamming!) had developed a strong relationship with the band. All of these past experiences and ongoing connections helped open doors for me when it came time to research the book; many of these doors, I should note, had otherwise remained long closed to others.

Q. How/when did you first get into The Smiths?

A. As editor of Jamming! back in 1983, I was sent, if not personally delivered, the first single, “Hand in Glove,” by Scott Piering at Rough Trade, who later become one of the Smiths’ many managers. Word spread incredibly quickly on the group, and by the time I got to see them in concert, that September, they were already all over evening radio and it was obvious that they were going to be huge. I will be honest and say that it was only with the second single, “This Charming Man,” released in November 1983, that I was truly converted. It was absolutely magical—the first genuinely classic guitar-based pop rock anthem to have come out of Britain’s independent music scene—and from there, I was hooked. I saw them in concert every year, got every record, read every interview.

Q. What were some of the most important aspects for you to get across in your biography?

A. As with all my biographies, I really wanted to place my subjects in the context of their times. Nothing happens in a vacuum, least of all great pop music, however much the subjects themselves might wish to encourage such a notion! The Smiths were a product of post–World War II Irish immigration to Manchester, of Roman Catholic schooling, of inner-city slum clearance, of a rapidly declining industrial city that—not coincidentally—became one of the global capitals of punk rock, and then even more musically vibrant with the emergence of a post-punk independent music scene. I make no apology for setting out my stall, so to speak, on all of these cultural developments. I think it makes the story of The Smiths themselves that much easier to understand.

As a Brit who has lived in the States since 1987 (the year The Smiths broke up), I wanted to ensure that I place the band in American context as well. Almost everything written in books about The Smiths tends to start and end in Europe. Yet The Smiths were enormously popular in America—their two albums released in 1987 each sold 500,000 copies without a video or a live date—and it’s important to understand how and why that popularity came about. The increased popularity of college radio, the emergence of Anglophiliac “progressive commercial” stations, and the existence of an “alternative” dance floor all played their part, as did Morrissey’s ability to cross international boundaries, despite what some presumed to be parochial lyrics.

Finally, I wanted to make sure that this was a story about a band called The Smiths, not about a singer called Morrissey or the partnership between Morrissey and Marr. And as such, I was determined not to be drawn into the solo years and the ongoing acrimony, legal action, and lingering bitterness that seems to exist between certain band members. That side of the saga has been endlessly covered. I was determined that my particular narrative should end when the band ended.

Q. What surprised you most about the interview process? What was the most interesting conversation you had?

A. I was warned, early on in the process, that the breakup of The Smiths had caused so much still-existent tension among its major players that I would need to tread very carefully and diplomatically if I wanted to get my interviews. This turned out to be sage advice. I was not totally surprised, but certainly intrigued, by how many of my prospective interviewees checked in with Johnny Marr before talking to me. (By comparison, only two or three people told me that they would only talk with Morrissey’s permission.) Which leads to the most interesting conversation—without doubt, it was the extensive multiple interviews I conducted with Marr. We spoke for 18 hours across two days in Manchester, including an almost unbroken 12-hour interview on the second day, which ended, around midnight, with us taking a nostalgic drive past Morrissey’s old house, where Johnny had first knocked on the door back in 1982. (Even then, we continued the interview process with phone conversations and multiple e-mails.) Johnny was incredibly giving not only of his time but of his memories, his emotions, and his regrets—and the book would not possibly have been the same without his input.

Q. What are the biggest misconceptions people have about The Smiths?

A. That they were miserable. You only have to look at pictures of The Smiths: they were having such a wonderful time throughout most of their five-year arc. Morrissey certainly suffered from periods of depression, and his claims to celibacy, his admission to suicidal thoughts, and his determination to write, as he said in a print interview, “for people who wouldn’t normally go to concerts, watch television, buy records or listen to the radio,” rendered him utterly unique within the world of pop music. But he was also one of the funniest characters in the history of that pop music, as evidenced by any number of his interview quotes—and also by his lyrics, never more so in the frequently misinterpreted “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now.”

From Booklist
Indie cult heavyweights the Smiths never charted a single higher than number 10, but they are widely considered to be an important musical component of British pop music of the 1980s. Their enigmatic vocalist and lyricist, Morrissey, is a bit of a hero to the disaffected, which only adds to his and the band’s angsty cachet. Of course, they broke up in 1987, but with rumored reunions that never materialized and the individual members’ post-Smiths activities (as a solo), Morrissey has cracked Top 10 lists), their self-conscious legend lives on. In relating the story of the band, Fletcher centers on Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, digging deep in terms of the details of the band’s creative process and progress—but with plenty of time for conjecture about the comprehensively enigmatic Morrissey. If readers are curious about, say, the ongoing mystery of Morrissey’s sexuality, Fletcher provides ample discussion of the various extant theories thereon. Morrissey just likes to know people are thinking about him. The result is a highly detailed—if a little ardent—omnibus Smiths and Morrissey source, useful as a reference and a straight-through read. --Mike Tribby

Fantastic!
By Christopher Benton
A fantastic book that took me a little longer than normal to read through all 600+ pages because I kept putting it down to listen to The Smiths' music, on vinyl of course that was being referenced in the chapters. Fletcher provides great context here from background on the city of Manchester and the educational and religious upbringing of the band members to in-depth details on the band's formation and rapid success in just a few short years and their eventual breakup. Numerous accounts on The Smith's songwriting process and recording techniques plus input from band members, management, road crew, record label execs and staff. So much ground is covered and it never gets dull. I thought I knew a bit about the band but turns out there was so much more to learn. They're Irish! When I first started listening to The Smiths in 1985 with Meat Is Murder I was heavy into loud American guitar bands especially Minor Threat, Black Flag, X and The Minutemen but the lads from Manchester blew me away (and most of my friends) with such an amazing less-is-more sonic approach coupled with the amazing wit of Morrissey's lyrics. Fletcher expands on that and shows you how it all came to be and how The Smiths have made such an impact not only in their home country but in America as well and puts to rest myths surrounding them. The short life span of the band seems to fit somehow with their story but the fact is that The Smiths' music has a timeless quality and always sounds fresh. Buy this book and read about this amazing band and in that process discover a little something about yourself along the way.

A rare writer
By Ron Hawkins
All you need to know about The Smiths. I can't imagine that any further book on The Smiths is needed unless Morrissey decides to publish his own version of events.

This is over 600 pages long and I read it in about five days, like Guralnick's first book on Elvis Presley this work immediately goes to the top of popular music biographies. The research, the level of detail, the balanced comment and Mr Fletcher's straightforward storytelling skills have all combined to make a fine work.

The main thing that I like about the book is that the author has focused strongly on the backgrounds of the various characters, especially Morrissey and Marr, placing them in the context of their times. The book is very strong in providing an understanding of the Manchester music scene the various Smiths emerged from. The fact that Tony Fletcher is a contemporary gives additional depth. We have also a great deal of information on The Smiths creative process, the business side and the touring (I didn't realise that The Smiths were as big as they were in the United States and were on the brink of major breakthrough).

It's a pleasing book in that there is very little dirt to reveal, we are reading about young popular musicians doing the work of popular musicians. I'm not greatly interested in Hammer of the Gods type biographies. The only disappointing 'revelation' (and it isn't one really) is Morrissey's meanness and reluctance to pay people, he probably pips Rod Stewart as the meanest man in rock. Morrissey and Rodders in the same sentence! Well he only has himself to blame.

I am a big Smiths and Morrissey fan but I am not familiar with the minute details of their career so there may be errors, I doubt that the errors are major. I am also a big fan of Johnny Thunders and the author should be aware that Thunders did not play a Gibson Les Paul but a Gibson Les Paul TV Special; very similar name but very different in body shape, weight, tone, quite a different instrument. A minor quibble but the point being made is that Marr by adopting the Les Paul was becoming more `rockist', like Thunders, Thunders was never in the Thin Lizzy school of rockist, they are your quintessential Les Paul players.

People who can write this well about popular music are rare, I look forward to reading more of Tony Fletcher's work.

Moz Art.
By Hal Martin
I have read several books about The Smiths, and I would have to say that this is by far the best. Fletcher is not clingy-sycophantic about the band, as some writers are, and was somewhat in their circle at the time, which lends his writing an air of legitimacy.

The stuff I found most fascinating and illuminating were the bits about Moz's youthful writing exploits as a chapbook scribe, playwright (he sent a play to Tony Wilson of Factory Records, who unfortunately lost it), and small-time music journalist. Fletcher has had access to letters of Moz's that we may well never see (though I have read his books on James Dean and the New York Dolls, quite easily available on the net), and I can't be the only one who thinks a collection of Moz letters/early writings would be a great thing to read.

Apart from that, well, Fletcher (sometimes nearly too) comprehensively documents the band from start to bitter finish 'in a chippy.' Many details will be already well known to Smiths fans, but the biographer still manages to find a great many details for the casual reader and obsessive apostle (and I would not consider myself one of these people, just somebody who loved The Smiths and Moz as a teen 20+ years ago) to dig into. A great, fun, fascinating read, and definitely one to listen to all the albums as you read, the songs exploding louder than old still-potent bombs in your head.
