Dogfight, A Love Story, by Matt Burgess

What Jonathan Lethem did for Brooklyn, Matt Burgess does for Queens in this exuberant and brilliant debut novel about a young drug dealer having a very bad weekend.

Alfredo Batista has some worries. Okay, a lot of worries. His older brother, Jose—sorry, Tariq—is returning from a stretch in prison after an unsuccessful robbery, a burglary that Alfredo was supposed to be part of. So now everyone thinks Alfredo snitched on his brother, which may have something to do with the fact that Alfredo is now dating Tariq’s ex-girlfriend, Isabel, who is eight months pregnant. Tariq’s violent streak is probably #1 worry on Alfredo’s list.

Also, he needs to steal a pit bull. For the homecoming dogfight.

Burgess brings to life the rich and vivid milieu of his hometown native Queens in all its glorious variety. Here is the real New York, a place where Pakistanis, Puerto Ricans, Haitians, An glos, African Americans, and West Indians scrap and mingle and love. But the real star here is Burgess’s incredible ear for language—the voices of his characters leap off the page in riotous, spot-on dialogue. The outer boroughs have their own language, where a polite greeting is fraught with menace, and an insult can be the expression of the most tender love.

With a story as intricately plotted as a Shakespearean comedy—or revenge tragedy, for that matter—and an electrically colloquial prose style, Dogfight, a Love Story establishes Matt Burgess as an exuberant new voice in contemporary literature. The great Queens novel has arrived.

From Booklist
Alfredo Batista of Queens wants to welcome his older brother, José, home from a 28-month stretch in prison for a burglary in which Alfredo was supposed to take part. So Alfredo acquires some Ecstasy for his brother (thereby seriously alienating a Russian drug kingpin) and plans a dogfight to mark the occasion. But there’s still the problem of Isabel, the girlfriend of José (who turned Muslim in prison and now calls himself Tariq); she fell in love with Alfredo and is pregnant with their child. Not to mention the fact that Alfredo and his best friend, Winston, are one dog short of participants for their fight. First-novelist Burgess has created full-bodied characters with on-the-mark dialogue, and he evokes his hometown of Queens (which, he notes, has the most efficiently run drug trade of the five boroughs) in a story that is alternately antic and drop-dead serious. Death is always just around the corner, as Alfredo fears, and several characters do die violently, but in the end, it’s life that is celebrated. An impressive debut, bristling with energy, from an author to watch. --Michele Leber

Review
"With an acute ear for dialogue and the poetry of the street.....a cliche-free depiction of gritty urban reality, reminiscent of Richard Price. But Burgess's city novel is less 'Clockers' than 'Portrait of the Artist as an Ambivalent Drug Dealer.....bursts of narrative bravado....DOGFIGHT burns through this explosive weekend like a lighted fuse.....takes a mighty swing at this streetwise drama about loyalty and betrayal"--New York Times Book Review

"Arresting and vibrant....electrifying"--Vanity Fair

"Every once in a while you come across a book that completely captures a place. Even if you've never been there yourself, it's like you can see it, smell it, taste it. Theres a new novel out that does that for New York. Specifically: the borough of Queens. Author Matt Burgess nails the places."--NPR's Weekend Edition

"The hilarious, harrowing story of an extremely bad weekend in the life of 19-year-old Alfredo Batista, a very small-time drug dealer with some very big problems, including the Mob, a seven-months-pregnant girlfriend, and an ex-con older brother who just might want to bash Alfredo’s head in.  Oh, and there’s the small matter of the pit bull Alfredo needs to steal, for the Homecoming dogfight.  Poor dog.  Poor Alfredo.  I couldn’t stop laughing."--Ben Fountain, bestselling author of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk

"Matt Burgess' "Dogfight, A Love Story" was my most memorable read of 2010. As the title implies, the novel mixes everyday urban conflict with slice-of-life tenderness and momentary grace. Burgess captures the bass-heavy symphony of the neighborhood and gets the voices just right. Mixing the comedic and dramatic is a tricky thing to pull off, but the author does so with astonishing success. Most surprisingly, this is his literary debut. I can hardly wait to see what he comes up with next."--George Pelacanos

"[A] talent to watch. He possesses an ear for dialogue that rivals Richard Price and a pacy sense of plot reminiscent of another fantastic recent debut, Josh Bazell's "Beat the Reaper". His style is strikingly visual—Mr Burgess doesn't sketch scenes so much as paint them as big and bright as a playground mural.....Burgess is an energetic and disciplined writer. Most importantly, "Dogfight" is tremendously fun to read."--The Economist

"Absorbing....rich....Like those before him, Burgess lives and dies by the credibility of his dialogue and details, and his portrayal is clearly the product of much close study."--Time Out New York

"Matt Burgess serves up a savory dish with his new novel, but the meat of the story is his writing....[an]exciting and really-tough-to-put-down novel....The plot is fun, original, addictive....The landscape Burgess paints (setting: Jackson Heights, Queens) has the alluring exoticism of a Gauguin....not merely funny or incisive but also feel true, and intimately so, as if revealing to us hidden parts of a world we already know....There's something more expansive at play here, as we watch Alfredo grapple with his conscience and fall deeper into an unknown yet eerily familiar world."--Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Sharp wit and enormous heart fill the pages of Dogfight, A Love Story.....intense, emotional and funny....a dazzling debut"--MetroMag

PRAISE FOR DOGFIGHT, A LOVE STORY

“Matt Burgess’s debut novel is a beautifully made, street-smart novel that is both funny and disturbing. Written with an almost furious energy, Dogfight has an amazingly well-rounded cast of characters and a plot that leads up to a violent and probably inevitable climax. This is the best first novel I have read in years.”
—Charles Baxter, author of The Feast of Love and The Soul Thief

“Dogfight takes you on a gritty tour of a city exploding with diversity, violence, and love. Matt Burgess is a major talent, blessed with a unique voice full of humor and an attitude that’s ready to elbow its way into American letters.”
—Ernesto Quiñonez, author of Bodega Dreams

Seeing me and Julio down by the school yard
By Lonya
Matt Burgess' debut novel, "Dogfight, A Love Story," is set in Queens NY. I picked it up because I grew up in Queens and my family was part of the great #7 train migration that took us westward from apartments in Woodside, Jackson Heights, Corona, East Elmhurst and finally to Flushing. I grew up going to places that come up in the book and Burgess gets Queens, dead solid perfect. The story would hit Corona, and there it was, the Lemon Ice King of Corona where it seemed the entire Borough would congregate on hot summer nights. The story moved to a bowling alley and there it was, the Whitestone Lanes: where I snuck my first cigarette and bummed my first sips of Colt 45 Malt Liquor and where the bowling shoes apparently still reek and where a lot of `business' still gets done in the parking lot. The description of the denizens of a local park (an asphalt playground really) seemed lifted as much from my own memory as from the author's imagination.

So even before getting to the story itself I was already grabbed by the atmospherics. Now, the question is, if you aren't from Queens and those atmospherics alone won't grab you - will you still like this book? I think the answer is a definite yes, a very definite yes. Burgess has created a number of characters that are funny and compelling. The three main characters are Alfredo Batista, his older brother Tariq, and Alfredo's very pregnant girl friend (and Tariq's former girlfriend) Isabel. These aren't perfect people, far from it. Alfredo is a small time pill and weed pusher, Isabel's been around the block a few times, and the story opens just as Tariq is released from a two-year stretch in an upstate prison. But they are real, or they certainly seemed real to me. As the story progresses, and as the flaws and warts on each of the character's become more apparent I found myself asking myself, why do I care about these people? Well I think the answer to that is the fact that Burgess has created a story-line that makes you want to keep reading.

For a first novel, this is a very good result.

Fantastic Debut Novel
By cja
Matt Burgess creates characters and writes dialogue better than any author I've read in years. By the end of the first chapter you have a great mental picture of each main character and have probably laughed out loud more than once at the witty dialogue. Add to that a great plot, and you have a page-turner that is impeccably written - very few authors have accomplished that recently, let alone debut authors.

-------------------

As a follow-up, I have to say the one-star review that begins "a book glorifying dogfighting is one I will not read" is about the dumbest and most Yogi Berra-esque statements I've seen. The book doesn't glorify dogfighting at all, but you would have to actually read the book to figure that out. The reviewer is essentially saying "Chicken tastes terrible, so I've never tried it"

Fast paced gritty story with characters that are both heroic and clueless. A great read!
By Linda Linguvic
I was interested in this recent novel because it is set in the borough of Queens, New York, my home town. I'm acquainted with the neighborhoods and, even though I never have lived in Jackson Heights, where this book is set, I can relate to the landmarks, the wide variety of ethnic groups who call this town their home, and the proximity of living in a borough that is just a hop, skip and a jump away from the glittering Manhattan Island.

The main character, Alfredo, is a 19-year old Puerto Rican low-level drug dealer. His girlfriend is pregnant, his brother is being released from jail, and he is looking for a new way to make money. He dreams up the idea of having a dogfight in the basement of the local candy store. He's never seen a dogfight, of course. And neither has anyone else in his group of friends. And so there are a lot of comic elements to this story. And yet, among the humor, the characters are very real and are both clueless and heroic at the same time. In other words, there's a humanity about them all that made me care. I cared so much, in fact, that I read this 290 page well-crafted novel in just one day.

The story is easy to follow and rich with nuance and reality. I'll never forget the scene where the pregnant girlfriend goes to Elmhurst hospital for a pre-natal exam, or the homecoming dinner the hard-working Puerto Rican mother prepares for her son who has just been released from jail and he refuses to eat it because it contains pork and he has converted to Islam. Then there are the cops assigned to wear plainclothes and cruise the neighborhood trying to make arrests so they can get overtime, and all the high-school dropouts and petty thieves. Each of the characters is just trying his or her best to get some joy out of their lives in spite of their low aspirations and the day-to-day drudgery of their lives.

The plot moves fast; there's not a wasted word. The dialog sounds real and gritty. I just couldn't put the book down.

Redefining Leadership: Character-Driven Habits of Effective Leaders, by Joseph M. Stowell

Is successful leadership measured simply by the outcomes a leader achieves, or is there another―more essential―yardstick for measuring success?  In Redefining Leadership, author, pastor, and college president Joe Stowell shows us that the best leaders are driven by Christ-formed character, and that truly successful leadership is not defined by the standards of this world but by the counter-intuitive practices and perspectives of the Kingdom of Christ.  With compelling personal stories and insights from the Bible, he highlights the contrast between these two radically different leadership styles and demonstrates that the teaching and example of King Jesus, the world’s most unlikely leader, is the only model of leadership that leads to maximum results, results that will have an eternal impact.

Review
'This book is powerful. It exposes the eternal consequences of having earthly applause for our Christian leadership and service, while receiving Heaven’s silence. And it is incredibly encouraging because it also reveals that leaders and ministries that seem to have earth’s silence may one day be the very ones who receive Heaven’s applause. After reading it, I re-examined my leadership, repented of my desire for “outcome,” and recommitted my “followership” to more clearly reflect our Servant King. Thank you, Joe Stowell.' -- Anne Graham Lotz, , Speaker and author of Wounded by God’s People

'My soul needed this book. Redefining Leadership offers the profound reminder that our legacy is formed by who we are, and not merely by what we accomplish.' -- Jeff Manion, , Senior Teaching Pastor, Ada Bible Church in Ada, Michigan, and author of The Land Between

'I am so grateful to God that my dear friend, Joe Stowell, has written Redefining Leadership. Not only is Joe a portrait of what he has written, but he has also spent much of his life and ministry shaping the next generation of Kingdom leaders. He writes not just from experience and what he has observed, but from a life and ministry marked by godly integrity. This book is a treasure and all who have been given the gift and privilege of influencing others. Thanks, Joe, for the clear, compelling reminder that we are to lead according to the ways of the Kingdom and the will of our King, Jesus Christ.' -- Dr. Crawford W. Loritts, Jr, , Author, speaker, radio host, and senior pastor of Fellowship Bible Church, Roswell, Georgia

'A revolutionary and life-shaping book on kingdom leadership, one rooted not in outcome-based theories about leadership but in theology---a kingdom-saturated and gospel-based theology where the leader is first a follower whose character is transformed by God’s grace. The revolution of this book is that God’s transformation of us makes us God’s kingdom leaders, and this is just the kind of leadership we need today. Five stars!' -- Scot McKnight, , Professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary

'Joe knows leadership. And he knows what the Bible says about leading. He’s a guide worth following.' -- John Ortberg, , senior pastor of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church and author of Who Is This Man?

A New Definition of Leadership
By Dr. David Steele
Leaders understand the true nature of the task before them. But true leadership must stowellbe redefined, according to Joseph Stowell. His newest book, Redefining Leadership seeks to draw leaders to a "character driven leadership experience that will produce maximum outcomes."

Stowell presents two distinctly different kinds of leaders: Outcome leaders and character-driven leaders. The former are referred to as "instinctive" leaders, the later - "kingdom" leaders. The author describes kingdom leadership which is "measured by the life of a leader who cuts a wide and impactful swath of positive influence." This is the kind of leader, in the final analysis, who makes a difference in God's kingdom.

The book is arranged in three parts:

Part I: A Redefined Priority

Outcome-driven leaders focus primarily end results while character driven leaders live exemplary, God-pleasing lives. Character-driven leaders "use their organization to build stellar people, who in turn build a thriving culture that produces maximum corporate outcomes to the fame and glory of God."

The author address potential pitfalls and "delusions" that character-driven leaders need to avoid. This brand of leader has his eyes fixated on the One who humbled himself and became a Servant to all, namely, Jesus Christ.

Part II: A Redefined Identity

Part 2 introduces the concept of "followership." The author maintains effective leaders "choose to identify themselves, first and foremost, as followers! Followers of Jesus." He adds, "Only when we have a firm grasp of our identity as a follower of Jesus are we equipped to effectively lead and influence others." Three qualities mark the leader who is committed to the notion of followership:

Follower-leaders count it an honor to follow Jesus.
Follow-leaders actively pursue Christ.
Follow-leaders are found in the "Way" with Him.
Part 2 proves to be the heart and soul of the book as the author spells out the importance of "moral authority" and the importance of humility in a growing leader who commits himself to the "Way" of Christ.

Part III: A Redefined Leader

The final section surveys the core competencies of a leader which is grounded in the kingdom priorities of Jesus. This leader relies on the strength that is granted through the indwelling Christ. Indeed, he is committed to the kingdom agenda that emerge in Matthew's gospel. Such a leader manifests qualities such as repentance, forgiveness, meekness, and mercy.

Redefining Leadership is a book which is totally unique. Few books devoted to the topic of Christian leadership are filled with the depth of wisdom found in these pages. Both young and seasoned Christian leaders would do well to pour over these pages and benefit from Dr. Stowell's wisdom.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review.

A Breath of Fresh Air In the Stifling Room of Get-Ahead Christianity
By Marcia Wilwerding
Leadership is one subject which seems to stir up a lot of debate these days, especially in the circles where it is most valued. Yet, it is the wrong type of leadership which has given it such a bad name. We tend to equate leadership with people who are driven and who get things done, often while lashing a whip on the backs of those below them in rank. Yet, Joe Stowell, as I have often heard the author referred as, has a view based on biblical truth which sets those notions on their heads.

Some would say because there are abuses in leadership that there should be no authority at all in the home or church. Yet, we mustn't throw that baby out with the bath water. Dr. Stowell clarifies this when he says, "...Positional authority is still an important form of authority, yet one that must be exercised with wisdom." He then goes on to describe how Christ who maintained His positional authority as the Son of God never used it to leverage power for His own benefit but rather to serve those under Him and to advance His Father's kingdom.[3] It is this type of servant leadership which Dr. Stowell encourages those in authority to practice, to lead by being a servant.

And, yet, the things taught in Redefining Leadership are not only helpful for pastors and corporate leaders, but also for fathers and mothers who have perhaps gotten the wrong idea of their purpose in parenting. What a difference it would make in every family if parents took their positions before God as servant leaders in their homes. I believe this is the missing element in most teaching on parenting, and it is where many authoritarian parents go terribly wrong.

Therefore, I would encourage not only reading Redefining Leadership for yourself, but would also suggest giving it as a gift to new parents as well as those going into ministry or being promoted in their company. There is so much here for all of us to learn.

Redefining Leadership: Following Jesus Instead Of Our Ego
By Jeremy D. Riley
Would you be OK if people 100 years after your death don't remember your name?

For Joseph Stowell’s “Redefining Leadership,” making Jesus large is the ultimate outcome of leadership. If one does not point to Jesus through their actions and words, then their leadership is not centered in the Kingdom of God. Instead, it is rooted in the idolatrous love of ourselves.

Stowell argues forcefully with story and logic for all leaders to take the Kingdom of God seriously and ditch the power leadership styles of this age. The top down structure of Wall Street has no place in the bottom up structure of the Church.

Stowell clearly describes two leadership styles rooted in either the kingdom of this world or God’s Kingdom and then he persuasively argues why you should take the latter approach. “Redefining Leadership” frames the conversation on leadership between character-driven leadership (CDL) and outcome-driven leadership. While the latter is driven by “getting [stuff] done” even if the means is not honorable, the former is centered on Kingdom centered leadership.

CDL is a much needed yet counterintuitive model because that is the road Jesus took. Jesus was humble and operated from the identity of suffering servant. Similarly, the follower of Jesus ought to operate under the same guiding principles that Jesus followed. As Paul would write in Philippians, “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus…”

Even while leading in places that might be difficult or not very glamorous, Jesus calls us to follow him. Through our “followership,” Jesus is made known. Stowell’s leadership model can best be summed up as “follow me as I follow Jesus” and “for me, to lead is Christ!”

This is a book worth reading and I heartily recommend it for anyone in leadership (which is everyone!).

Because God Loves Them Even More Than You Do

It’s our instinct as parents to shield our children from harm. But our true responsibility is to raise children equipped to live well for God even in the midst of struggle. Upside-Down Prayers for Parents encourages us to pray for our children in ways we may never have before:

• I pray you’ll get caught doing things wrong—and experience the power of confession.
• I pray your prayers will go unanswered—and you’ll find a deeper trust in Him.
• I pray you’ll fail in things that don’t matter—and learn what matters to God.
• I pray you’ll encounter battles—and discover that God is your greatest ally.

By turning our prayers “upside down,” we not only learn to release our children to the care of God alone, we also uncover how our own desires need to be submitted to God’s will.

Each entry in this thirty-one-day devotional includes a short reflection, a Scripture verse, and ideas to jump-start conversations between you and your child or teenager. Together you’ll discover a deeper trust in God that will help you make it through the upside-down times with a right-side-up perspective.

Review
Praise for Upside-Down Prayers for Parents

“Reading Lisa’s book was a flashback to my own mothering years because my husband and I often carried similar petitions to our Father in heaven. We prayed our children would get caught in every lie every time. We asked God to allow them small fender-bender accidents as teens to temper their indestructible, immortal view of their lives. And when they experienced inevitable rejection, loneliness, and discouragement, we attempted to teach them that God wanted to use those hard experiences for their good. And they heard us speak these prayers, so when the answers came they knew Who was in control. Upside-Down Prayers for Parents will dispel the happily-ever-after deception that pervades our culture and will replace it with a solid bedrock view of God whose goal is our holiness, not our happiness—a foundational truth for everyday parenting. I plan to give Lisa’s book to all my married children.”
—Barbara Rainey, cofounder of FamilyLife Today and coauthor of Growing a Spiritually Strong Family

“Lisa Bergren offers wise counsel, clear direction, and brilliant insights into how to pray in a way that shapes your child’s character. Every mom needs this book! It will become a resource you will refer to often during your child’s formative years and beyond.”
—Robin Jones Gunn, author of the Christy Miller series and Praying for Your Future Husband

“Lisa T. Bergren has crafted the perfect practical guide to enable parents to express the desires of their hearts, wrap them tightly in relevant Scripture, and send them soaring heavenward. The impact on their children—and quiet confidence they’ll experience themselves—will reap sweet spiritual rewards for generations to come. If you’ve ever longed to trust God and entrust your kids to Him, this book is for you!”
— Karen Ehman, Proverbs 31 Ministries director of speakers and author of six books, including LET. IT. GO.: How to Stop Running the Show and Start Walking in Faith

“Lisa’s upside-down prayers require a whole new level of faith and trust in Jesus. Reading this book and praying these prayers made me realize how tightly I was holding on to my children—and how much I needed to release them to God. These are exactly the prayers I’ve always wanted to pray for my children but could never find the words myself!”
—Erin Mohring, author of HomeWithTheBoys.net

“I love this book! These prayers confirm what I’ve learned in my twenty-three years as a mom: that sometimes it’s the hard moments that bring about the heart-transformation in our kids. These are prayers to wrestle through—and find God in the midst of them. Highly recommended!”
—Tricia Goyer, author of Blue Like Play Dough: The Shape of Motherhood in the Grip of God

“This is the perfect book for parents who want God’s best for their children even when it’s the difficult, more costly choice. Dive into this book and surrender your kids to Him. This book isn’t a must read; it’s a must do!”
—Nicole O’Dell, author of the Hot Buttons series for parents

“Lisa T. Bergren describes this book as ‘not a sweet and gentle devotional.’ She’s right. The prayers she asks us to offer on behalf of our kids are scary, raw, and honest. They demand our bravery. That’s how I know they’re good. And that’s why I’ll be praying these prayers along with her.”
—Micha Boyett, author of Mama:Monk blog

“After reading these words and praying these prayers for thirty-one days, your heart can’t help but be turned inside out. This book showed me the prayers I’ve always wanted to pray for my kids but just didn’t know it. Health and favor merely scratch the surface of what I want for my kids; reliance on God, warrior faith, and deep assurance of God’s love is what I really desire. Lisa T. Bergren leads us into examining our hearts so we can position our lives and prayers on the true blessing, redemption, power, and plans God has for our lives and the lives of our children.”

Introduction

Nurturing a Faith That Endures, Come What May

Here in southern Colorado, we recently witnessed the most devastating wildfire in state history. Hundreds of homes and thousands of acres burned. Smoke billowed up in an eerily colored, apocalyptic swirl, then descended over our city in a thick, brown haze that made your lungs hurt when you took a deep breath. Ash rained down, covering rooftops and yards—the sorrowful, wispy remains of other people’s rooftops and yards. One elderly couple lost their lives.

It was surreal, horrific to watch the flames march down the mountains like a dragon with a thousand tongues of fire, engulfing one house after another in fireballs. Over a thousand firefighters fought to keep it from taking other homes, yet it raced unabated across the forest floor, taking ridge after ridge.

In the aftermath, it broke our hearts to look upon the blackened remains of the once-verdant, beautifully green hills and valleys that border our town. But experts say that fire is actually good for the forest. (They’d prefer a manageable
surface fire to a full-scale canopy fire like this one, but sometimes the choice isn’t theirs.) According to principles of forest management, what looks like devastation can actually be a gift, thinning out the dead material, opening up the tree canopy, and enriching the soil with nutrients that aid new life.

Individuals who so tragically lost their entire neighborhood to the fire also sought the good that comes through loss.
They sifted through the remains of their homes—a foot deep in ash—but they consistently mused about the gifts of life, of community, of people coming to their aid. It was heartwarming to watch a spirit of unity unfold. Amid tragedy and crisis, people came together around a common focus: a desire to help others heal, survive, and rise again. And in our busy, separated, largely short-on-true-community lives, this was another gift we all counted among the ashes.

As Christians, we’re called to take the lead when hard times hit. To stand and be counted among those who place their confidence in a God who is completely good, even when life feels bad. Yes, life is rough. At times, brutal. But it’s also
amazingly, achingly beautiful. Full of hope and potential and possibility. And if we want to raise children whose faith can thrive in difficult circumstances—children who live in a loving, wholly trusting relationship with their God, who are able to see the beauty even in the midst of the fire and smoke, who remain alert for signs of hope amid the rubble—we have to model that kind of relationship with our God. Come what may.

As parents, we want to equip our children to be strong and courageous disciples. But we can only teach them what we already know for ourselves, right? So this devotional addresses both our personal relationship with God—to make sure we have his priorities clear in our heads and hearts—and our role as parents who seek to trust our loving God with our
precious children, knowing he only seeks to be closer to them. Come what may.

We feel responsible to protect and shield our children from harm. So it seems odd to wish upon them anything but
peace and prosperity. But if you’re like me, the adults you admire—the people you’d like to befriend and emulate—are
people who live life deeply, richly, and in a holy fashion, regardless of what life throws at ’em. They have the spiritual
stamina to make it through the fires of difficulty and maintain a sense of optimism and hope. To press on through the darkness, which in turn somehow helps them better appreciate the light.

It’s understandable and right to pray for our children’s protection, health, and well-being. But too often, we slip into
spiritual timidity. We like to stay in that safe zone—and we definitely prefer to see our children in that happy place, right? But if we wish to be warriors for Christ, resilient disciples of the Way, we’re after more depth in discipleship, knowledge of the Holy, and a full-on trust of the One who loves our children best. And if we’re to trust him with everything in us, we have to lay our lives—past, present, and future—in his hands. Perhaps most challenging, we have to lay our children’s lives there as well.

This is not a sweet and gentle devotional. It wrestles with thirty-one issues that will most likely drive us to our knees,
praying ourselves or our children through them. But I believe God redeems the time, the effort, the pain, every time. And when you fully absorb these truths and make them a part of your prayer life, I believe you will see a harvest in your own life and in your children’s. Because this is rich, dark, moist, fertile soil, post-fire stuff. Growth stuff. The kind of stuff that initially leaves you grasping for words and gasping for air. But after the smoke clears, when you can rise and take a deep, unencumbered breath, you will feel stronger for the experience, knowing that you’ve witnessed yet again the faithfulness of the One who loves you most.

The topics we’ll be exploring touch on truths we want our children to learn sooner rather than later, truths that offer the
security of knowing they will always be loved and will never be alone. And that, ultimately, is what all parents really want for their children, right? To that end, I’ve included little “discussion starters” at the end of each devotional, to aid you in sharing these perspective-shaping truths with your children.

I am praying for you this day, as you hold this devotional in your hands, that our Lord will hold you and your precious
children in his hands. Peace upon you, sister and brother. May you be strong and courageous. May you make your God and your children proud by daring to know him better, each and every day, and by trusting him, regardless of what comes, so that your relationship with the Holy deepens, and your life grows richer in the process. Amen!

Thought Provoking...but I'm Still Not Sure!
By Randi Sampson
As parents, we want what's best for our children. We pray that they do right, that they don't get into trouble and that nothing bad ever happens to them. It's only natural, right? This devotional, 'Upside Down Prayers for Parents: 31 Daring Devotions for Entrusting Your Child-and Yourself-to God' by Lisa T. Bergren challenges us as parents to reconsider the way that we pray for our children. Rather than praying that everything goes perfectly in their lives, she asks us to pray that they face hardships, disappointment and loss so that they may learn to rely on God through those tough times.

To some extent, I understand the concept and agree with some of the prayers in this book...such as Day 6, "I pray you'll sweat-and learn what it means to work hard for what's worthwhile' or Day 9 "I pray you'll experience unanswered prayers-and develop deeper, wider trust". The reality is, life has its downhill moments, and we are often made stronger and wiser because of them, and we can use them as a chance to grow closer to God. On that point, I completely understand and respect the message of the book. We as parents cannot just pray that everything goes perfectly in our child's life, we must also teach them how to handle and learn from the not so great experiences.

However, there are other prayers that make me think twice about the message of the book, such as Day 11 "I pray you'll know what it is to be lonely-and find intimacy with the One who is always beside you." Yes, the second part of that prayer is positive, but there is something about this one that rubs me the wrong way. Perhaps it is because I have a child with Autism and pray for nothing more than for him to be able to develop meaningful relationships and not be alone in his life (rather that means friendship, a romantic relationship, etc)...I could never pray for my child to be alone for that very reason. I could also never pray that he be shattered or be forced to give up on a dream...in his life, he will experience more trials, hardship, discrimination, etc than any child should have to...and I cannot imagine praying any more of that upon him.

Overall, I suppose I'm a bit torn. As I said, I think the ideas behind the book are good, but I still can't fully stand behind the concept. It's definitely a worthwhile and thought provoking read regardless on if you fully agree or not. It will make you think and also remind you in your own life to look at those moments as a blessing in disguise...or at least a chance to learn and grow anyway!

Challenging...Not Ready For This Yet
By PJMartinthemom
This book was very challenging to read. As a mother, I want to pray prayers of protection over my children. Prayers for health, wisdom, drawing closer to the Lord, keeping safe, learning well. I will continue to pray those prayers for my children. However, I liked the different angle that the author approached praying for our children.
In some situations I can see praying these upside down prayers. Hard situations.
The entire book put a different light on praying for your children. Although some of the prayers I could never bring myself to pray for my children, the message behind each one that she shares is definitely something I could pray.
I could pray for them to know forgiveness and be able to forgive...but I do not think I could pray for them to HAVE to have done something that needed forgiving. For one thing, I know we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God...so I don't have to pray that they will! :)
I did think the book was very different from any other parenting devotional book I read, and I think it has much value if taken in the right spirit.

Useful tool
By Leigh
For several years now I have used Stormie Omartian's The Power of a Praying® Parent Prayer and Study Guide (Power of Praying) as a way to inform and guide my prayer time for my children. I don't always pick up the book, but I keep a list of the topics in my journal and refer to it during my prayer time. I find that it helps me remember to pray for down the road and big picture topics I might not always remember in the midst of raising young children. When I saw Upside-Down Prayers for Parents by Lisa T. Bergren I was drawn to it, thinking that it might be another useful tool in helping me think more broadly about ways I can pray for my children.

I was fairly impressed with Bergren's book. I think the main difference between her book and Omartain's classic is that Upside-Down Prayers is more focused on life lessons and heart issues than Omartian's. Where Omartian's book focuses a lot on character qualities and the blessings we desire for our children, Bergren's book deals more with praying our children learn who God is through the difficulties of life. For example, Omartian's book encourages parents to pray that our children will live free of unforgiveness, attract godly friends, be free from fear, and invite the joy of the Lord. Bergen's book lists topics such as "I pray you'll experience unanswered prayers--and find deeper, wider trust", "I pray you'll have to forgive someone who doesn't deserve it--and find the peace that forgiveness means," and "I pray your beliefs will be challenged--and the roots of your faith will be strengthened."

Overall, Upside-Down Prayers for Parents is biblically grounded and a good guide in thinking of praying for our children from a different angle. Admittedly there are a few chapters I'm not sure I want to pray exactly this way. For example, Day 16: "I pray you'll lose a job--and know that your Provider has not forgotten you." I'm not sure I want to pray that my children *will* lose a job, though I can certainly pray that *if* they do they will learnt to trust God as provider. I can also pray that they will learn that God is their provider--not their employer and not their bank account. Generally I find myself agreeing with Bergren's comments for each day, though I may make that will/if/when distinction as I'm praying for my children. I think parents who regularly pray for their children will find this book a helpful tool in developing a robust prayer time for their children.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a quality review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I did not guarantee a positive review.

Pit Bull: The Battle over an American Icon, by Bronwen Dickey

The hugely illuminating story of how a popular breed of dog became the most demonized and supposedly the most dangerous of dogs—and what role humans have played in the transformation.

When Bronwen Dickey brought her new dog home, she saw no traces of the infamous viciousness in her affectionate, timid pit bull. Which made her wonder: How had the breed—beloved by Teddy Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and Hollywood’s “Little Rascals”—come to be known as a brutal fighter?

Her search for answers takes her from nineteenth-century New York City dogfighting pits—the cruelty of which drew the attention of the recently formed ASPCA—to early twentieth‑century movie sets, where pit bulls cavorted with Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton; from the battlefields of Gettysburg and the Marne, where pit bulls earned presidential recognition, to desolate urban neighborhoods where the dogs were loved, prized—and sometimes brutalized.

Whether through love or fear, hatred or devotion, humans are bound to the history of the pit bull. With unfailing thoughtfulness, compassion, and a firm grasp of scientific fact, Dickey offers us a clear-eyed portrait of this extraordinary breed, and an insightful view of Americans’ relationship with their dogs.

    Review
25 Amazing New Books for Spring, Mental Floss

“This is a very good book… Ms. Dickey has earned her reputation as a first-rate reporter.” —The Wall Street Journal

"Ms. Dickey not only writes about the ebb and flow of public fear and loathing, she takes the reader on a thoroughly comprehensible tour of genetics and behavioral science to explain why breeding never guarantees an individual dog’s personality, and shouldn’t be used to condemn it.... Picking out one breed to blame is neither warranted nor effective, and a reader of her book will be hard put to disagree." —The New York Times

“Brilliant… A powerful and disturbing book that shows how the rise of the killer-pit bull narrative reflects many broader American anxieties and pathologies surrounding race, class, and poverty… A remarkable study of our capacities for cruelty and compassion toward dogs and other humans, and an eloquent argument for abandoning the fears and prejudices that have made pit bulls in particular the victims of mistreatment.” —Christian Science Monitor

“Like the pit bull itself, this book is sturdy, complicated and resists easy categorization… As Dickey exhaustively demonstrates, there is no ‘aggression gene’ and no such thing as a dangerous breed.” —The New York Times Book Review

"In covering a subject that evokes strong, deep-seated emotions, Dickey herself refrains from making sweeping judgments about the pit-bull temperament. She neither condemns nor exalts these dogs. The story of the pit bull is complex, and at times heartbreaking. It’s fraught with cruelty and poverty, but also compassion, generosity, and, occasionally, clear-headed thinking. Somehow, Dickey manages to find hope for the future of this dog and its reputation." —LA Review of Books

"Assiduously researched... Dickey is relentless in exposing the brutal racism and classism at the heart of the pit bull scare. For that reason alone, her book is an invaluable resource for those who want and need a counter-narrative to the usual stereotyping of animals. Pit Bull is an important study of how one animal and its context can reveal everything about the link between race, class, and 'animality'... Dickey is clearly a superb journalist." —Current Affairs

“Sustained and heavily researched… Pit Bull is very good at framing and contextualizing the swirl of fear and aversion these dogs induced… Informative, keenly argued and engaging.” —San Francisco Chronicle

"A tremendous contribution to our understanding not only of these dogs but also of our human relationships with them. There's been too much hysteria about pit bulls, and Dickey shows that we've let myth and stereotype run wild when it comes to our thinking about these dogs." —Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States

"A tour de force; the most comprehensive, thoughtful, and dispassionate treatment of this topic ever undertaken... Dickey’s book—a combination of exhaustive research, the presentation of impartial facts, the perceptive sense of social and political context and the addition of a rich and detailed historical framework—is an enormously valuable contribution." —Rick Bernthal, board chairman, Humane Society of the United States

    "Fascinating." —World

“Judiciously filled with data, anecdotes, illustrations and a self-deprecating, canny sense of humor, Pit Bull is a constantly surprising compendium of dog lore, human foible and social prejudice… The much-maligned pit bull finds redemption in Bronwen Dickey's entertaining, thoughtful and well-researched study of this noble canine.” —Shelf Awareness

“This is more than a ‘dog book.’ Dickey has written a book that is part sociology, part history; it is an exploration of our relationship with dogs and how we view them in context with our relationship with each other; it is a look at the media and social media and how they fan the flames and spread falsehoods (on all sides of an issue); and it is a scientific view of dogs, including genetics.” —Everyday eBook

“[Dickey] repeatedly draws parallels between treatment of poor and disenfranchised humans and their dogs, and it’s damning testimony… With Dickey’s thorough reporting on a provocative topic, Pit Bull shows how the human need for something to blame can put innocent victims in the crosshairs.” —BookPage

“As appealing to readers of history and social science as it is to dog enthusiasts… With able writing, in tightly packed and thorough chapters, Dickey shares much food for thought… Dickey’s broad scope will leave readers affected and pondering.” —Booklist

“A thoughtful examination of pit bulls and an intense look at ourselves and society. Dickey adeptly scrutinizes the science used to condemn pit bulls to separate fact from fiction and thus weaves a narrative that artfully relays both the hard science and the emotion of the pit bull issue… This exceptional, thoroughly researched, and expertly written work is a must.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“An appealing look at how our relationships with man's best friend provides a mirror of cultural mores.” —Kirkus Reviews

"[Dickey] illuminates many of the facts and exposes many of the myths surrounding pit bulls and dogs in general... Dickey's immersive and illuminating work deserves a wide audience." —Publishers Weekly

“I can't stress enough how highly I recommend Pit Bull: The Battle over an American Icon. I believe it is easily among the three ‘must read’ books for anyone in animal welfare—or for anyone making policy decisions about animals. It is one of the most thoroughly researched books I've ever read about dogs, and presented in a very readable, entertaining fashion. And whether you are a newcomer to animal welfare, or a relative old-timer, or if you make policy decisions about animal welfare, this book will make you smarter, and make you question many of the things you think you know about dogs—and the people who own them.”  —Kansas City Dog Blog

“The ‘pit bull’ is a legend, a fear, an exaggeration, a bête noire. Bronwen Dickey does this misunderstood animal the great service of looking beyond the myth. What she finds are dogs who deserve better than we've been giving them.” —Alexandra Horowitz, author, Inside of a Dog

“Bronwen Dickey set out to write about a single dog breed, but by investigating what happened to pit bulls she ended up writing about our whole crazy culture. Her quest began almost accidentally, when she acquired a pit bull that was nothing like its vicious stereotype. Curious, she discovered that the breed had once been an American favorite. Remember the RCA Victrola dog? It was a pit bull. So was the lovable mascot Pete the Pup in the immensely popular Our Gang movies in the 1930s. How had this symbol of friendliness and reliability become so feared that people fled when she walked her dog on the street? This beautifully assembled tale of how the pit bull was transformed into a demon perfectly captures a disquieting strain of hysteria in our national life. It's the rare dog story that tells us as much about people as about dogs.” —Charles C. Mann, author, 1491

“Bronwen Dickey’s book is a marvelously compelling read, both perfectly modulated and passionate without being strident, and completely eye-opening. She is a damn good writer, and the book is full of eloquent, sharp, clear, knowledge-bearing sentences that convinced me while they also broke down my easy and long-held assumptions. An impressive debut.” —Richard Bausch, author, Wives and Lovers

“Pit Bull tells how ‘America's Dog’ morphed into ‘America's nightmare.’ Ms. Dickey's scrupulous, encyclopedic research pretty well proves that harmless pets have been scapegoated to feed our fears. Pit Bull is a fascinating, complex story of canine genetics, media missteps and an appalling national willingness to kill poor peoples' dogs.” —Donald McCaig, author, Mr. and Mrs. Dog

“Bronwen Dickey writes so well, with such understated elegance. I spent a lifetime afraid of pit bulls, hating creatures that came to me through newspapers and the media, until I read this book.” —Pat Conroy, author, The Prince of Tides

“The pit bull is truly America's Dog, and few breeds are surrounded with as much mythology, fear and misinformation. Bronwen Dickey has written the first comprehensive explanation of how the bull terrier of the gentry transformed nearly overnight into the chained-up hellhound of the underclass. This book gets to the cultural roots of the 'demon dog' fantasy and helps us understand that the stories we tell about pit bulls are really stories about violence, class and repressed rage. Dickey is a consummate reporter and a brilliant incisive writer who has given us a book about far more than dogs.” —Tom Zoellner, author, Train: Riding the Rails that Created the Modern World

"This is one of the best dog books you will ever read. But, it is also about the big stuff – the moral status of animals, the science of nature and nurture, the role of race in our culture.  In Pit Bull, Bronwen Dickey weaves a tale in which the most divisive of animal issues becomes a metaphor for deep-seated conflicts in American society." —Hal Herzog, author, Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat

Beautifully written, scientifically rigorous and respectful of her reader
    By Scottie
I listened to Ms. Dickey's interview on NPR and ordered her book within a few days. I read the reviews on Amazon and suggested to a friend that she might like it. She wasn't interested and based her opinion on some of the negative reviews that began to appear on Amazon. I read the latest reviews again and was surprised at the nastiness and misinformation they contained. It was clear to me most hadn't even read the book, and were driven by some sort of viscousness against the author.

I received my copy and found it to be one of the best books I've read in some time. The author helps the reader through hyperbole and hidden agendas and pseudoscience by citing evidence that is verifiable. Her research is thorough and well-sourced, and her interviews are thoughtful and unbiased. She is gifted, insightful, and her writing addresses uncomfortable truths about us and our dogs. We all bear some responsibility for the profiling of dogs and their humans, the misinformation and myth, and the behavioral projection and anthropomorphism that has created the plight suffered by certain breeds.

Ms. Dickey's book is a valuable tool that reminds us all to not be swayed by rumor and fear mongering, but to seek out legitimate and rigorous resources in challenging our biases.

Highly suggest this book if you want facts without conjecture and one-liners.
By Striving for Fair & Balanced
*THIS* is how a non-fiction book is supposed to be written. It is extremely clear when reading the book the amount of research that went into it. Not just searching google and looking for user comments or reading news articles, but actual legitimate research, interviews and more research. This book not only delves into the history of the breed, the reputation of the breed, but looks at modern, peer reviewed, scientific research papers that have been performed to show the major discrepancies between reality and "hysteria". She's done a wonderful job of delving into the psyche of humans in the modern world and why we are so prone to buy into hysteria, while discounting all facts that show us the error of our ways. I agree with other reviewers about the context of this book being more about people than dogs. It uses the topic of "Pit Bulls", which isn't even a specific dog breed, to explore people and try to make sense of some of our more senseless ways. I just finished this book and couldn't be more pleased. I have to say, this is one of the best non-fiction books I have read.

As an aside, scary but also eye-roll worthy, I got up this morning and someone had sent me a good write-up regarding the book since they knew I was reading it. It's about the author and the craziness she has had thrown her way since writing the book: You can find it by googling "How Writing About Pit Bulls Led to Death Threats, Online and IRL". It's on lithub. I've noticed several other articles throughout the last few weeks speaking about the crazy experiences book stores and this author have had from the same small group of people. It would be ridiculous and laugh worthy, if it wasn't reality. Luckily, it's a very small group of people involved but the reason I feel this is relevant enough to add to my review is because it's basically an extension of what Ms. Dickey explains in her book. It's not the dogs that are the problem. It is now and has always been the people that are the problem. Regardless of what side of the fence they are on, whether they are irresponsible owners, dog fighters using the dogs to profit, or people who consider themselves crusaders who spend their life attacking innocent pet owners over their choice of pet, all of the issues related to dogs of any breed can always be traced back to people.

I also agree with the above mentioned article that Mrs. Dickey would not be getting as much vitriol from this group if she were a man, and she definitely wouldn't be getting daily attacks from these people regarding her looks (She's quite pretty but people get petty when it comes to hysteria). Which is yet another interesting aspect of our modern day culture. That's a whole different topic (but not really since it's based on the same fears) that could have a similar book written about it. Maybe Mrs. Dickey can explore that topic in the future.

Unlike the One-Star Reviewers, I *Have* Read This Book. I agree with the NY Times: Superb Science Writing.
    By Democritus
Note that a raft of one-star "reviews" showed up within hours of the book's publication. These people were sent over from an anti-pit-bull hate group on Facebook, which is urging its members to "swarm" Amazon. They have NOT read Bronwen Dickey's book. The Facebook page is explicit: "Here's the deal: We don't need to read it to understand the book's underlying theme."

Well, here's the real deal: you DO have to read it. That's how books work. If you haven't actually read something -- carefully -- then no: you are not in a position to understand anything about it. Much less review it.

I received an electronic galley a couple of weeks ago, and read it with joy. I assure you that it's by far the most careful and rigorous treatment of the subject to date; it's also an undeniable work of literature -- a gift to the genre -- and genuinely entertaining. I wonder whether any of the kindhearted people leaving fake reviews will ever get around to glancing at the book itself. Apart from everything else, they might be disappointed by how evenhanded the work is: Ms. Dickey spends a fair bit of time with voices on both sides of the pit-bull debate. Her own conclusions favor science -- she doesn't side with the extremists (who can be found, unfortunately, in both camps). It's a thorough, level-headed and intelligent treatment of a fraught topic; I expect it will remain the definitive work for some time.

    -----------------------------------

Note: the hate group has just changed its name -- they used to call themselves "Pit Bulls and Amputees." They're now hiding behind the innocuous title, "Pit Bull Public Safety Education and Advocacy." Their campaign of harassment against Ms. Dickey has been documented by the press, however, and it makes for ugly reading: do a search on "Pit bull author’s critics are off the leash," by Josh Shaffer (The News & Observer). Also note: I have nothing whatsoever to do with any sort of "right wing, pro-pit bull group" -- the libel posted below. This is the kind of tactic that Ms. Dickey is encountering: ad hominem lies, conjured from thin air.
