Great Stories

I didn't know a lot about Glen Payne and George Younce, except for what I'd seen on TV, until a friend told me about Henry Slaughter's autobiography, IN SEARCH OF THE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE. After reading that wonderful book, it was only natural to do a search on Amazon.com about some of the other people who were part of Mr. Slaughter's story...Bill Gaither's IT'S MORE THAN THE MUSIC was one of those. So was THE CATHEDRALS by Mr. Payne and Mr. Younce.

I'm glad I ordered it. It's literally filled with stories that about the people, music, and artists who have impacted people all over the world with their music.

I loved this book. The Cathedrals were a great quartet. Loved George and Glenn. Ernie Haase and Signature Sound are my favorite quartet, now. So glad they hired Ernie in 1990, which gave him a wonderful start.

Old Standard renewed.

Have had the previous edition for many years and it is the mainstay of safe practice used in my labs for many years. The new edition does not disappoint and now resides alongside it older sibling on my workplace bookshelf. I recommend this to any person working in a laboratory environment using hazardous materials.

Don't lose instructions... or drop deck...

I bought these hoping to use them with my elementary-school class, hoping my students could use them independently. They can't.

Sadly, what the cards want the student to do is not always obvious. An adult is needed to read the instruction card that precedes each grouping of cards. Sadly, too, these instructions are not always clear.

And don't drop the cards. Cards aren't labeled so you'll end up in a big game of grouping cards that appear to go together.

In contrast, I can set my students off by themselves with the Brain Quest decks.

Even bought at a discount (Amazon, Costco) these cards are too dear.

From now on, I'll not buy cards of this sort sight unseen.

I'll also not be inclined to give SYLVAN products the benefit of the doubt. I'd assumed SYLVAN was a quality educational company.

Great flashcards for my ESL tutee. He is a motivated first grader. This will be his summer homework. Diego is doing very well in school, and he loves it. He wants to be the best in everything, and he usually is.

His parents are extremely supportive of his achievements. Since he learned English three years ago, he has excelled in school and playing with friends as he is an extrovert. He has so much energy and uses it well to play and read.

Great gift!

The letters in this book are fully engaging and beautifully presented, spanning a full range - from rejection letters sent to famous people (Andy Warhol, Jimi Hendrix, etc.) to relationship kissoffs ("You were right; I'll be fine without you") to notes scrawled by kids ("I hat you," [sic], "I'm running away"). But what's especially impressive is how the letters flow, one after another, with little treasures left here and there -- a typed note from Eleanor Roosevelt, a sexy text about a "doggystyle" party, the saddest break-up letter ever, and on and on. They're like sparkling one-act plays. And the book isn't just entertaining to read: it helps you see clearly that you're not alone in the universe, that everyone gets shot down once in a while. This would be a great gift for graduates seeking to make their way in the world with their pride and sense of humor in tact.

Not worth the money

This was an amusing concept, and one in ten or fifteen of the letters in the book are actually very funny. The others are simply boring as hell. If the funny ones were made into a book, it would be a slender volume, indeed. I slogged through a reading of a foreclosure notice, numerous rejection letters of no interest whatsoever, a petition for divorce, and a long (boring) notice to a parent that her child bites other children and is being sent home. The book is virtually all filler, and very little frosting. I wouldn't buy it if I were you; if you want to read rejections of this quality, you could just send poorly written material to publishers and then visit your own mailbox. It's a shame, because this could have been much better.

Huge disappointment - not at all funny

I ordered this book expecting that the rejection letters would be funny and entertaining. They're not. Many of them are simply standard, straight-forward rejection letters and I had to wonder, from an editorial standpoint, why they were even included. Some of them are mildly entertaining once you know the back story, but the background information is included in the very last section rather than with the letter itself. This is a very disappointing, and not at all amusing, book.

Real Science, for Non-Scientists

My four-star rating is for the content, not the style. Other reviews have called it "dumbed down" because of superfluous anecdotes, useless analogies, and passages that sound as if they're aimed at grade-school children. There is something to that, but there is also a lot of real science here. The effect is rather disconcerting, a bit like "Oh, Dick, see the kinase phosphorylate the tyrosine." (Don't worry; the terms are defined in the text.) But, all in all, it is worth reading.

The review which says that the book looks at the workings of the human body is most accurate. There is some material on signaling between bacteria, but the book is mostly about us humans. This is too bad for me, because I have a strong interest in evolutionary biology and more comparison across the spectrum of life would have been welcome. But many readers will be interested primarily in the material presented here.

I found the fifth chapter, which covers the brain and the immune system, to have too much analogy and not enough biochemistry for me. But it may be informative for a reader who has less knowledge of molecular biology than I do. (If you'd like some perspective on my background, click on my name at the head of this review.)

To sum up: for non-scientists, this is a good introduction to a subject of considerable interest, and it covers a wide range. If you want to know more about any particular topic, it gives you the terms you need to surf the web. I expect to do a lot of that.

Cell-cell signaling simplified

Debra Niehoff does an incredible job at simplifying the complexity of cell-cell signaling and condensing thousands of research papers into an exciting book. Communication among cells is an important area of science that includes such diverse fields as embryology, oncology, pharmacology, neuroscience, endocrinology, microbiology, and many others. However, most scientists rarely consider the similarities in the signaling pathways between bacteria and humans, or among different systems in humans. By providing an overview of cell-cell signaling in diverse systems, Dr. Niehoff gives a unique perspective that will be educational even to those in the field, although the primary target is scientists in other fields and non-scientists.

The relevance of cell-cell signaling to many diseases, including diabetes and cancer, makes this compelling reading for non-scientists. Dr. Niehoff's writing style, filled with wit and anecdotes, makes a difficult subject easy to comprehend. Her comparisons between cell-cell signaling and human social interactions provide a simple way to understand the cell biology, and the occasional use of humor keeps the subject interesting. Overall, this is one of the best books I have read in the area of neuroscience/cell biology that is written for non-scientists (or scientist in other fields, or young scientists-to-be).

A complex and beautiful tongue made easily understandable

I'd like to think I'm a pretty smart guy, but science books often leave me cold. However, wanting to learn something about how we are built and why things work the way they do,or don't, I chose this book hoping to be enlightened...and I was.

I was especially drawn in by the almost poetic style, where Niehoff's tales, relating the mysteries of cell biology and the development of our minds and bodies to everyday events in her family life, made me easily able to understand complex science in a way that allowed me to feel like an expert, and know myself, far better than I did before I read this very unique book

I heartily recommend Niehoff's book to the inquisitive reader, seeking a means to understand the basic biology of our bodies and selves. It is delivered in a style agreeable and accessible to a generalist like me, who reads passionately in many fields of interest. Judging from the complexity and depth of material covered I am guessing scientists of all types might find this enlightening, as well

Given the superficiality of so much media today it is truly refreshing to find issues of such depth covered in such an easily accessible way. I suggest that you buy this book, and learn about yourself, and the body and mind you live in.
