Chapter 1 Psst! Snobbins!' Lily Robbins didn't have to look up from the pizza boxes she was carrying to know that voice. It was Shad Shifferdecker the most obnoxious kid in the entire sixth grade. She tossed her mane of red hair and, as usual, ignored him. And, as usual, he persisted. That was one of the things that made him so obnoxious. 'Snobbins!' he hissed again. 'Are you gonna eat all that pizza yourself? Dude!' Lily just kept moving toward the door out of Little Caesar's. Just a couple more steps and I'll be away from the absurd little creep, she told herself. And the sooner the better. She leaned against the glass door and pushed herself out into the January-freezing air. 'See ya tomorrow,' Shad said behind her. 'If you can get through the classroom door' The door slapped shut, and Lily hurried toward the maroon van where her mom was waiting with the motor running and the heater blasting. But even though Lily couldn't hear him anymore, she knew Shad wasn't finished with her. He never was. Don't look back, she warned herself. Or you'll see something gross. Still, just as she reached the van she caught a glimpse of her mom's face. It was twisted up into a question mark as she stared inside Little Caesar's. Lily couldn't help it. She took a glance over her shoulder and immediately wished she hadn't. There was Shad at the door, his whole jacket crammed inside his T-shirt and his cheeks puffed out to three times their normal size so that he looked like a demented version of the Pillsbury doughboy. You are so not funny! Lily wanted to shout at him. Instead she flipped her head around and stomped toward the van. Or, at least she tried to. On her second step, her heel slid on the ice, and she careened crazily forward, juggling pizza boxes and heading for a collision with the frozen ground. The pizzas hit first with Lily right on top of them. She could feel the warmth of the grease through the box against her cheek. The smell of pepperoni went right up her nose. Above her she could hear the van window on the passenger side going down. 'You all right, Lil?' Mom said. 'Yeah,' Lily answered through her teeth. 'Is the pizza all right?' Lily moaned and peeled herself off the pile of slightly flattened boxes. 'I bet all the topping is stuck to the cardboard now,' she said. 'Don't worry about it,' Mom said. 'Just get in the van before you freeze your buns off and our dinner gets cold.' Lily did, although she wasn't as worried about her buns or the pizza as she was about the story Shad Shifferdecker was going to spread to their whole class tomorrow. But she didn't even risk a glance inside Little Caesar's as she climbed into the van and examined the top pizza. 'I think it's okay,' she said while Mom was backing out of the parking place and mercifully leaving Shad behind. 'Just some pepperoni stuck to the lid, but I can peel that off.' 'And I would if I were you,' Mom said dryly, 'before your brothers get a look at it and want to know what happened.' 'Mom, please don't' 'How much is it worth to you for me to keep my mouth shut?' Mom's mouth was twitching the way it always did when she was teasing. She never smiled that much, although the twinkle in her big brown doe-eyes usually gave her away. 'You're not gonna tell,' Lily said. 'Who was that delightful child in the pizza place?' Mom said, lips still twitching. 'Friend of yours?' 'No, he is NOT! Gross!' 'Come on, now, Lil, don't hold back. Tell me how you really feel.' 'I can't stand Shad Shifferdecker,' Lily said, inspecting pizza #2. 'He cannot leave me alone he's in my face all the time, telling me my hair looks like it's on fire or my mouth looks like Mick Jagger's or my skin's so white it blinds him out in the sun.' 'Charming,' Mom said. 'How's the one with the works? Art will go ballistic if his sausage is mixed up with his Canadian bacon.' Lily pried open the lid to the pizza on the bottom and wrinkled her nose. 'How do you know whether it's messed up or not?' she said. 'It always looks like somebody already ate it to me, with all that stuff on the' 'Lily, hold on!' Mom's arm came out and flattened against Lily's chest. The van swerved sharply, and suddenly felt as if it were out of control. Lily looked up just in time to see a pair of taillights in front of them disappear as the car spun around. Headlights glared in their faces. 'Mom!' Lily screamed. She squeezed her eyes shut and, for some reason she could never figure out, clutched the pizza boxes against her. She felt the van lurch to a stop, and she waited for the crash that was surely going to kill them both. But all she heard was her mother's gasp. 'Oh, dear Lord!' Lily opened her eyes again. The other car had spun once more and was sailing across the road, straight toward a pickup truck coming from the other direction. As Lily and her mother watched, the two vehicles slammed together and crumpled like like two pizza boxes. Metal smashed. Glass broke. And then it was as quiet as snow itself. 'Dear Lord,' Mom said again. Only this time her voice was quiet and grim as she reached for the car phone and punched in three numbers. 'Do you think anybody got hurt?' Lily said. She knew the answer was obvious, but it was the only thing that came into her head. 'There's been an accident on Route 130,' Mom was saying into the phone. How could somebody not get hurt in that? Lily thought. She shuddered and tried not to think of what the people inside must look like. Mom hung up the phone and grabbed her gloves. 'I'm going to go see if I can do anything before the paramedics get here.'

a really good lily book

What about lily?
lily is a six grader in this book and she has her own club with her best friends. Their names are Zooey, Suzy, Kresha, and last but not least lily's best friend Reni. But in this book the two best friends don't always get along. One day lily was in the car with her mom and there was a car crash right in front of them. lily's mom gets out but tells lily to stay in the car. But lily doesn't listen.She sees a little boy on the road right by the car crash and she runs over to him. After that lily dcides she wants to become a "great healer" as she calls it. So she tells the Girlz about it (their club name is Girlz) because they always do everything together. But this time Reni doen't want to do what lily wants to do. And then she starts to call lily bossy. But lily denies it. Then they get in a fight. And then a teribble thing happens when Reni tries to get revenge.... O well I guess you will have to read the book and find out what happens. And if you like this book don't stop there. There is a whole sreies. And there are six books in the sreies. And something exiting happens in very book. I am just telling you about the second book but I have read all of them and you should too. And compared to any other series I have read I personally think these are the best! I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read

Another great Girlz book

Lily helps save a young boy in a car accident and decides she wants to be a doctor. She joins a medical class and tries to turns the Girlz only club into a health class. But when an accident happens and her friends don't want to hang out with her Lily learns a lesson on friendship. I enjoyed this book very much I didn't want to put it down!

My girls received this set of books for Christmas and they are devouring them! They are literally waiting in line and breathing down their sister's neck waiting for their turn. Enjoying the RideThe books address "real" issues in an entertaining, yet true to life way...good stuff.

*Starred Review* Historian Marrin regards the nineteenth-century zealot John Brown as being “the father of American terrorism,” a man who would use any means to effect what he believed was his God-given mission: to eradicate slavery in the U.S. In pursuit of his mission, the volcanic Brown didn’t draw the line at violence or even murder, being personally responsible for a clutch of deaths in “bloody Kansas.” It is, however, his failed attempt to capture the federal armory at Harpers Ferry for which he is perhaps best remembered. It was his goal to seize the many guns stored there to arm an uprising of slaves that he hoped to foment. Though he didn’t succeed, his failure was, in fact, a triumph, as his subsequent death by hanging turned him into a martyr, an inspiration for abolitionists, and a catalyst for the ensuing Civil War. A absolutely stunning, superb read, meticulously researched

I have been working with books for young people for years, and I read a few hundred every year. This one is not only a phenomenal read, it is thought-provoking, beautifully written and wonderfully insightful. I have read much about the raid on Harper's Ferry, but much here was new to me.
My husband does not work with books for children, but I have given him Marrin books before and he loves him. He read two chapters of the library copy I had and announced he needed to mark up and highlight the book-and bought a copy. He has decided to read every book Marrin ever wrote.
I heartily recommend this book.

Albert Marrin Fans will Love it, as always!

Albert Marrin Fans will see a new approach in this book. As Mr. Marrin does so well he combines the biography of a man with the events of the time. In this book, however, he calls on the reader to consider the actions of John Brown in acting out of "conscience". A good look back at past events and how we should respond in current situations that are sometimes nearly as troubling.

In an age of ubiquitous downsizing, the idea of a company's loyalty to its employees seems almost outdated. William Pollard calls The Soul of the Firm.

Pollard and ServiceMaster have restored a much needed moral center to the contemporary workplace. ServiceMaster, which has enjoyed exponential growth over two decades, now employs and manages some 200,000 people offering a variety of cleaning and maintenance services to customers in thirty-one countries. This success, Pollard argues, is built on a philosophy that seeks to honor and realize the potential of every employee.

ServiceMaster's guiding principles, notes Pollard, are engraved in stone in the company's headquarters: "To honor God in all we do; to help people develop; to pursue excellence; to grow profitably." The first two principles apply even in a diverse and pluralistic environment, Pollard says, because their purpose is not to exclude, but instead to recognize the dignity and worth of every worker and commit the company to developing and supporting each worker.

In a series of lucid, powerful, and inspirational chapters, Pollard shows these principles at work both in ServiceMaster and in other contexts. A corporation with a true soul and solid core values.

This book describes a rarity in the modern Western corporate arena; a company that operates in the marketplace of publicly held companies led by a set of core values aligned to putting people before profits. The values espoused by the ServiceMaster Company include; "To Honor God In All We Do, To Help People Develop, To Pursue Excellence, and To Grow Profitably."
As stated by the CEO, C. William Pollard, "the first two are 'ends', the second two are 'means'. Few find fault with our commitment to a set of principles, it is the God language that raises some eyebrows." That is not the only thing this Company has done to raise eyebrows, meeting the numbers, delivering consistent world-class service, and delivering profits to shareholders also gets attention.
This book is a great look into a Company with values all organizations could benefit from. Among them is the concept that "employees want to work for a cause, not just a living". When you think about what ServiceMaster actually does (not the most glamorous or well-paid work) we can understand how difficult this would be to execute.
The book itself is a quick read, and full of some good insight. It is not as in depth as I would have liked, but overall provides some outstanding ideas on how to prioritize values, and remain true to one's principles. The example set by the Company and the CEO demonstrates that not all of Corporate America places greed as their highest priority.

Continues where the "E-Myth" left off...

The credibility of the author is that he's been CEO of Service Master, who did over 2 BILLION last year. He does an excellent job of showing how a major corporation can care about clients and employees AND lead it's industry in market share and profits. He delivers on the implications of the title, and continues where the 'E-Myth' left off, by talking about a well rounded firm indeed having a 'soul', & cares for the 24 hour person; not just the 8 hr person on the clock. He postulates THAT will be REQUIRED in the Firm that is to prosper into the next century. Quick read. Good summary at end on leadership highlights....

Not Remarkable

"Soul of the Firm" is, unfortunately, just another anecdotal essay written by a top CEO. Pollard's achievements are incredible, and a reader should expect an incredible book from him.

Pollard's history involves running one of the most impressive service companies ever, ServiceMaster. He took it from an already solid company and helped it become a great company through buyouts, aggressive expansion, and managing with integrity. He deserves to be hailed into a management hall of fame. His book, however, lacks depth.

We read what he thinks, and this is good stuff. In fact, everything in here is good stuff. His views on God, what his faith means in the workplace, how to be a servant leader. I'm nodding my head saying "Preach it!" as I write. But give us more, Mr. Pollard. Give us details of a businessman's business, not a book for upper mangement to give to middle managers on a work retreat to read on the train commute.

Don't repeat Carnegie, Drucker with a Christian backdrop. We've read their books. Give us meat. ServiceMaster has had some complex issues they've struggled through. Did overexpansion complicate stock prices? As society continues to secularize, what does this mean to a once faith-based company? Will it go the way of the YMCA, with its roots merely as its history, or will it hold tight to the core principles and God which wrought those principles?

Challenge us, Mr. Pollard. How does a Christian who is a top manager deal with underpaid staff workers who can barely pay their rent? Give them raises? Bonuses? If their valuable service defines the company's value, how are they to be treated? How does the leader of a huge company deal both corporately and personally with world economic issues, as it affects the microworld surrounding the local office? How does a Christian leader avoid bias in promoting staff? How do top leaders accept long hours and responsibilities, while yet having a family?

None of that is adequately addressed in "Soul of the Firm."

So much is not being said in this book that I was disappointed. Pollard could've taken another 100 pp and filled it with real direction. Instead, we are given a rehash of the generic "run the company with good old fashioned values" story.

Although the book is dated with respect to Remote Sensing technology, it is still a very useful compendium of how this technology can inform analysis and decision-making in the social sciences.

Nothing new here.

Maybe this was cutting edge in the early 1990s, but today many of the chapters come off as dry, and devoid of creative or incisive thinking on the future of the field. Plenty of grandstanding and self glorification (see the Wood and Skole chaper in particular).

I have only flipped around in it so far but it looks like it will be a good little book to read. However I didn't realize that the book was as old as it is. I think it said it was made in the late 70's. Plus it was my own fault for not reading more about it before buying. Other then that I was happy with it.

During the 15 years since the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources issued its last report on the general management of rodents, advances in biomedical technology and increased public awareness of laboratory animal issues have created a new research environment. This book brings researchers up to date on both of these aspects of laboratory investigation and provides a comprehensive resource manual for management of laboratory rodents. It reviews relevant laws and ethical considerations, and it examines the role and responsibilities of mandatory institutional animal care and use committees. The expert panel addresses animal selection, sources of laboratory rodents, nomenclature and record keeping, management of genetically and nongenetically defined colonies, and management of animals with special needs. Investigators will find detailed guidance on housing, environment, sanitation, diet and caloric restriction, and facilities design.
