Is Your Job Making You “Stupid”?

Adam Smith, author of The Wealth of Nations, once wrote that a person who spends his life performing the same repetitive tasks “generally becomes as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human creature to become.” Wow! Now that’s not a pretty picture. Unfortunately, much of our work today consists of those boring, repetitive tasks.

But maybe you’re one of the many who have gotten caught up in thinking work is just something you do to support your weekends. Work is that necessary evil, a means to an end, or just a curse from God. You probably take your role of providing for yourself and those depending on you seriously. But you don’t expect to enjoy your work—you just do what has to be done.

Only now you’re seeing that even loyalty and dependability bring no guarantees. Lately you’ve seen coworkers who have been let go after years of faithful service. Perhaps your entire industryhas been shaken by outsourcing or changing technology. Maybe you’re tired of the long commute and being tied to your desk when you know you could make your own hours and still be productive. You may have ideas stirring that you think could create new income and time freedom.

But here comes another Monday. Maybe feeling trapped is just the reality of the way things are. Doesn’t everyone dread Mondays? Doesn’t every responsible person just bury their dreams and passions in exchange for getting a paycheck?

Absolutely not! All of us, no matter how old we are or what kind of work we’re doing, can learn to bring the same excitement to our jobs that we bring to whatever we love to do on our days off. I believe that each one of us can pursue work that is a reflection of our best selves—a true fulfillment of our callings.

No More Mondays will show you that meaningful work really is within your grasp. And once you’ve opened the door and seen all the exciting career opportunities that await you—whether you decide to revolutionize your current job or launch a new career altogether—you’ll find you can’t go back to the old way of working.”

From No More Mondays

For everyone who dreads going to work on Monday mornings, inspiring advice on how to find fulfilling work in an uncertain age.

Do you hate Mondays?

If so, what's keeping you at your current job?

If you said a steady paycheck and the promise of a secure retirement, then you're in for a big disappointment. In today's volatile economy, there is nothing safe about punching the clock for a job you hate.

As beloved talk-show host and bestselling author Dan Miller reveals, the only way to find true security is by following your calling and then finding or creating work that matches that calling and passion.

No More Mondays’s practical, inspirational advice speaks to people looking for guidance on how to launch a new career or business, those who want to stay in their current jobs and give the old 9-to-5 model a twenty-first-century makeover, and managers desperate to understand the way people want to work today. For all of them, Dan Miller's message is loud and clear: If you're one of those people who dread going to work on Mondays, do something about it!

Don’t Be “Stupid”

William and his wife, Bonnie, were smiling when they walked into my office, but it was clear they had a lot on their minds. They were worried about their financial future and eager for advice. Both were attractive, vibrant professionals who were clearly confident and successful. At fifty–three years old, William had been a commercial pilot with a major airline for twenty–seven years. His annual salary was more than $200,000, and years earlier he had calculated that, with his investments and his pension, he could retire in high style by age fifty–six. But then his investments took a big dive and the airline defaulted on its pension plan. Suddenly it seemed uncertain that he’d even have a job for three more years, let alone the money to stop working.

William and Bonnie are not alone in having their career path and financial plans disappear within months. The status of most employee pension plans sits somewhere between threatened and dead and gone. IBM has announced it will discontinue pension benefits starting in 2008 and shift to 401(k) plans that will save the company as much as $3 billion over the next few years. Following the lead of United and US Airways, other major airlines have proposed dumping their pensions in bankruptcy. Allstate Insurance has “invited” all 6,200 of its agents to become independent contractors, giving up their health insurance and pension benefits in the process. There is no way the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation can back up these folding pension plans. The PBGC is already on the hook for $62.3 billion in expected pension payouts with only $390 billion in its accounts. So where does this leave you and me?

“Revolutionary” Thinking

As I told William and Bonnie, if you think like a traditional “employee,” you are placing yourself in jeopardy. We are witnessing the dawn of a revolution in which each one of us will become completely responsible for our own income, benefits, and retirement. But don’t assume this is a negative transition—in fact, what I’m going to reveal in these pages is that never before have we had so many opportunities to take control over the shape of our careers. Never before has the potential for fulfilling work and true wealth been greater. Sure, the times, they are a–changing. But you can stay ahead of the inevitable changes—and benefit from them—by seeing the wealth of new opportunities available to you and planning for them now.

While my use of the word Revolutionary may conjure up the idea of donning a pointy hat and bringing a cannon in to work tomorrow, that’s not exactly what I have in mind. The dictionary defines revolutionary as “radically new or innovative; outside or beyond established procedure, principles, etc.,” as in a revolutionary discovery. It’s revolutionary to become more than simply complacent in your workplace. After all, the traditional employee does not often embrace radically new or innovative thinking—and frequently does not think much at all. The traditional employee does what he or she is expected to do, completes established procedures, and makes sure things are done today the same way they were done yesterday. Revolutionaries pave their own ways; they stretch the rules and think of ways to do things better. A brief warning: Revolutionaries may be seen as threats to the status quo. I even have a close friend who was fired for “thinking too much.” In traditional work positions, the requirements of the job are frequently imposed on you, regardless of your passions, calling, or unique skills. But what kind of way is this to spend the majority of your waking life? Wasn’t my friend’s firing really a kind of liberation?

And what about you? Does your work really allow you to make the best use of your abilities, your personality traits, your values and dreams? If you were to pull the paycheck blindfold off your eyes, would you see work that's authentically fulfilling?

Have You Made the Most of the Life You Have?
• Are you where you thought you’d be at this stage of your life?
• Have you ever had a sense of “calling”?
• How did you hear that calling?
• Is your work a fulfillment of your calling?
• Do you go home at night with a sense of meaning, purpose, and accomplishment?
• If nothing changed in your life over the next five years, would that be okay?
• If you want different results next year, what are you willing to change about what you are doing now?

Within the pages of No More Mondays, you will discover new opportunities and rediscover things about yourself that will provide you with a sense of meaning, accomplishment, and fulfillment. This book is filled with practical advice on how to move from traditional work to an authentic—and perhaps revolutionary—investment of your time and energy. And as you become a Revolutionary, you will find the preceding questions much easier to answer.

Success is never an accident. It typically starts as imagination, becomes a dream, stimulates a goal, grows into a plan of action—which then inevitably meets with opportunity. Don’t get stuck along the way.

Sit Straight and Stay in the Lines . . . Why?

Unfortunately, from the first day of school, our academic system has been teaching us to work in a workplace that is disappearing. We were told to sit up straight, talk only when it was our turn, walk in an orderly fashion to the lunchroom, follow instructions, and color inside the lines. These instructions encourage the mind–set we can refer to as “paycheck mentality.” As children, we learn that, if we go by the rules, do what we’re told, we will be rewarded. Do what the teacher says, and you’ll get good grades. Naturally these lessons prepare us for a paycheck mentality: Show up for work, don’t make waves, and put in your time. With these skills you can get a paycheck, but you probably won’t be equipped for the revolution in the workplace that will liberate you from the old way of working: mind–numbing and often poorly paid production– and knowledge–based work models. By production work I mean the repetitive work done in factories and on assembly lines. By knowledge work I mean the kind that involves managing data and analyzing information. Not only are these models outdated and soul-stripping, but they’re endangered by technology and easily outsourced. Revolutionaries, by contrast, may change what they do every day; they look for results, they don’t watch for how many hours they have worked, and they work in ways that may be unique and surprising.

He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery. —Harold Wilson

According to the late Peter Drucker, we are reaching the end of a forty–year period (1970-2010) that has brought more change than the world has ever seen—and there's more where that came from. As we approach the end of this time frame, the speed of change is increasing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is now predicting that 50 percent of the jobs we will have in the next ten years have not yet been created. Bureau experts are further predicting that in another five years only 50 percent of the American workforce will be employees. We are seeing an explosion of new work models, including consultants, independent contractors, electronic immigrants, teleworkers, and contingency laborers. While in past years entrepreneurs were expected to rent buildings and hire employees, these days they may operate Internet businesses that require neither. Today’s temps may work from home and design their own schedules. These are not the characteristics of the workplace we were led to expect by our parents and grandparents. These are not the kinds of workplaces where the loyalty of a company guarantees us a weekly paycheck in exchange for our time.

If terms like contingency worker or temp sound unappealing, you can create your own. What would you like to be called? How about “creative,” “free,” “imaginative,” “innovative,” “original,” “ingenious,” “inspired,” “pioneering,” “groundbreaking,” or “clever”? Why don’t you create your own original word for your ideal work environment?

A few years ago I decided that instead of entrepreneur, the term Eaglepreneur had a nicer ring to it and accentuated the way I differ from a traditional entrepreneur. I liked many aspects of what is implied by the term entrepreneur, but I did not envision myself as another Bill Gates or Sam Walton or dream of managing twenty thousand employees. I enjoy working independently and making my own decisions, but I’d rather not be bogged down by the traditional business elements of a bricks–and–mortar establishment with employees, leases, and sign permits. Therefore, I decided I was an Eaglepreneur. Go ahead, check it out—http://www.eaglepreneur.com—I have the domain. I claimed that title, and you can do the same with your own. As a Revolutionary, you too will recognize the new opportunities to custom–build your own fulfilling work.

Yes, the workplace is changing—and yes, the career ladder is broken. Today’s career path may look more like a labyrinth, in which every time you thought you were heading straight toward the goal, you reach a turn in the road and need to change direction to continue your progress. It’s initially frightening, of course, but only before you consider the payoff. These days, you can build skills and competence in one job and move along to a new company, confident that you are still on the right path. But forget about moving up one notch each year in your current company—it may not happen. You can also forget about being rewarded just because you’ve been around one more year. Few people are being rewarded for longevity. The only things that get rewarded in today’s workplace are results.

Yes, millions of Americans have found this new way of working intimidating and unexpected. This giant tidal wave of change has swept over their lives, frequently not taking them toward their dreams but setting them back, sometimes tragically. Rather than the pleasant retirement they anticipated, they have been confronted with downsizing, outsourcing, reengineering, mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring. Seniority is no longer valued, and common benefits like health insurance are disappearing, even in the jobs that do remain.

As I wrote about in my previous book, 48 Days to the Work You Love, many people have felt victimized by these workplace changes. ATMs are doing the work of 179,000 former bank tellers, sight–recognition machines have replaced 47,000 postal workers, and self-scanning systems now help you check out at the grocery store without the need for a friendly cashier. Apparel workers and financial analysts have been coerced into training their foreign counterparts who will work for a fraction of the hourly wage expected in America. Also in this group are the 33,000 General Motors employees who have been told their jobs will be eliminated. Volkswagen is predicting the elimination of 20,000 jobs; at the time of this writing, Ford is threatening to cut 40,000 positions, Chrysler 14,500, and Mercedes 6,000. No one is immune from the changes that face us every day.

There is another important reason that work needs to be redefined: Today we're all looking for more than just a paycheck. We have philosophical and spiritual questions that challenge our workplace contentment. With all the uncertainty in the workplace and the uncertainty in our world in general, I find that more people than ever before are looking for ways to contribute-to make a difference, to make the world a better place, to do something noble, to make sure they are living out the purpose for their lives by doing work that really matters.

Fortunately, the unexpected opportunities for doing just that are astounding. Thanks to the Internet, the ease of communication around the world, and the growth of service and information computer applications, it’s never been easier to start a small business and run it from home with virtually no overhead. People are finding a new affirmation of right–brain skills and the profitability of artistic, creative, and compassionate skills.
Here are just a few examples of some Revolutionaries I've met lately who never could have done what they're doing in previous eras but who are thriving today. At a recent corporate party, a gentleman drew a quick caricature of my wife and me, telling us he gets a hundred dollars an hour for doing what he loves to do. Every Friday our masseuse arrives at our house, providing our massages in a manner convenient for us and with no rent or utility costs for her. A recent client decided to forgo traditional publishing and instead write an e-book; he now nets in excess of ten thousand dollars a month, with no printing or shipping charges. A young man just completed a stamped concrete sidewalk at our country house. Although he has only a high school diploma, I paid him as much as I'd have paid a highly trained professional for his unique ability.
And in my own business, I'm constantly on the lookout for new ways to grow and reach more people. I recently experimented with a teleseminar, giving a talk on a niche topic to students from around the world who participated without the obstacles of travel and hotel expenses. I put on my blue jeans, baseball cap, and a headset, and after a mere seventy-minute presentation deposited eighteen thousand dollars in my bank account.
These and other revolutionary work models aren't just providing us with exciting and fulfilling new career paths. As a (perhaps surprising) added benefit, they are raising our standards of living. People often assume that if they follow their dreams or do something more creative and less traditional, they will have to adjust to a meager income. However, in my observation and personal experience, I have seen the opposite-following one's dreams typically releases not only a new sense of peace, meaning, and accomplishment but also a financial windfall.
Telecommuting allows today's workers to make big-city money while living high in the hills of Colorado. Virtual businesses allow shoestring operations to compete with traditional bricks-and-mortar businesses, without the hassle of overhead expenses.
And the opportunities aren't limited to those of us who want to strike out on our own. In the past ten years, there has been a 96 percent increase in the number of American workers who have negotiated flexible work schedules. John Challenger, of the outplacement consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, recently reported that 29 percent of the workforce has a lot of say in where and when they work. JetBlue Airways may be the ultimate example. All of the airline's one thousand reservations agents work from computers in their homes.
With advances in technology and a shrinking skilled labor pool, companies can look anywhere in the world for workers. You can complain about "all the jobs going to India" or be thrilled that now you can live on top of a mountain in Woodland Park, Colorado, and still be integrally involved in the day-to-day operations of a great company (as my son Kevin is). Thanks to satellite Internet reception, he can run with the elk in the morning, teach his kids to fly-fish at midday, and be on a national conference call that afternoon-all with no commute to the office or compromise in compensation.

Yeah! A message right brainers can grab onto and run with.
By Armchair Interviews
For years, my husband and I have been devotees of motivational books and tapes. We have scores of them in our collection and have read and listened to many more. Previous, to No More Mondays, neither of us had ever read anything by Dan Miller. We won't be making that mistake again.

It is one thing to find a book positively loaded with solid, up-to-date information as Miller's book, it is another to find one as compulsively readable as No More Mondays. Filled with wonderful stories, and powerful anecdotes, this book delivers a motivational jolt.

Part of the attraction is that Mr. Miller is saying just what I want to hear. I've spent much of my life wishing I could be one of the many-those who rise dutifully each morning and head to the office where they laugh sociably with their colleagues, contribute brilliantly at every meeting, and receive a regular paycheck. Unfortunately, like so many others, this round peg does not fit into that square hole

The traditional workplace is hostile territory for people like me-with nary a brain cell dedicated to left-brain activity. Miller says that the old workplace is disappearing, Good news! The real story, though, is that we right-brain, creative types will inherit the new one, where out-of-the box thinking and new untried methods will replace our current, antiquated system.

For years, we right brainers have found it difficult to be who we're hard-wired to be, without apology. Many of us come from families full of left-brain traditionalist who not only don't understand us but see us as patently defective. Dan Miller gives us permission to be ourselves and also supports and encourages our efforts to become more of who we are. Our time has come. Right brainers unite and rise victorious!

The upshot of the story is that my husband and I were both so inspired, that we have decided to pursue an idea we've had for some time for a $5 improvement for every kitchen in America-and beyond. "American Inventor" here we come! You just can't ask any more from a book than that.

Armchair Interviews says: Right brainers-this book is for you.

Everyone Should Read This One
By Barbara Warren
The job market is changing rapidly, and loyalty to the company or from employers to employees is a thing of the past. Dan Miller is the host of a weekly radio show and is often seen on TV. He believes the rapid changes in the workplace offer opportunities for people seeking new career changes.
He sets out a program for finding your career choice. He also lists a few people who were considered failures. People like Jerry Seinfeld, Winston Churchill, and Steven Spielberg. I enjoyed the story of the manager of the Grand Ole Opry who fired Elvis Pressley after one performance. He said, "You ain't going nowhere, son. You ought to go back to driving a truck." That has to be one shining example of bad judgment. He also drives home the point that we should never let anyone else's opinion stop us from pursuing our dreams. If you're not happy with your job, take a look at No More Mondays. You may find the answers you're looking for here.

Dan's best yet!
By Dave Malin
I've read nearly all of Dan Miller's books and manuals. No More Mondays draws from each of those titles and products to "pull it all together" in one user friendly volume. His advice and recommendations give you enough of a skeleton for you to begin to hang your own dreams and goals upon. Some material is repreated from his other books, but there's enough new material to make it worthwhile. Keep a notepad with you as you read and take notes as you go, too. Good luck!

In contrast to other NIOSH programs, the Health Hazard Evaluation Program is not primarily a research program. Rather, it investigates and provides advice to workplaces in response to requests from employers, employees and their representatives, and federal agencies.

The National Research Council was charged with evaluating the NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation Program and determining whether program activities resulted in improvements in workplace practices and decreases in hazardous exposures that cause occupational illnesses. The program was found to play a key role in addressing existing widespread or emerging occupational health issues. This book makes several recommendations that could improve a very strong program including more systematic use of surveillance data to facilitate priority setting, and greater interaction with a broader array of workers, industries, and other government agencies.

Highly entertaining
By Steven Sabin
I read these books more than 20 years ago, and decided to re-read them again recently. Originally two separate books, I was pleased to see them bundled into a single package here. As another reviewer has stated, and I quite concur, the first book leaves far too much unresolved, and the second book really cannot stand alone. It simply can't be read as anything other than one lengthy saga rather than two stand-alone books.

Elsewhere, Lawhead has been categorized as being in the "Christian fiction" genre but I must take strenuous issue with this. It pigeon-holes his work far too much and sends a message to non-christian readers that they needn't bother picking up this fine author's novels unless they share his faith. This would be a true shame. Lawhead's books are not at all typical of so-called christian fiction which is almost always written for a distinctly evangelical audience and culture. In contrast, although Lawhead's novels always contain a certain amount of spiritual subject matter such as the existence of evil and suffering, the existence of God and truth, and similar topics, they are neither preachy nor overbearing, and the material isn't really presented in a way that I would even consider to be indicative of organized religion. It's actually often presented in a much more mystical fashion that some Christians may even find mildly objectionable because it ocassionally mixes elements of paganism and Christianity.

Regardless, most Christian readers will find Lawhead's books enjoyable because the author's worldview will be largely consistent with their own and he tells a great story without resorting to profanity, gratuitous sex, and other salacious props (in that regard, he is similar to John Grisham). Non-christian readers: don't make the mistake of dismissing this and other Lawhead novels as suitable only for the shelves of the local Bible book store. It is a wonderful read regardless of your spiritual views and I seriously doubt any readers will walk away feeling preached to at any level...any more than readers would likely feel preached to by John Grisham's "The Testament."

To my knowledge, this is Stephen Lawhead's only foray into the sci-fi genre, and he does an admirable job. For those unfamiliar with Lawhead, he shines the brightest in Celtic historical novels, and I believe some of his best work is in the 5-book "Pendragon Cycle," a multi-generational saga that follows Merlin, King Arthur, and others from the famous "Knights of the Roundtable" lore. But, enough of advertisements for his other books.

In the 2-part "Empyrion" saga, we follow the adventures of Orion Treat, a sort of Joe Average from sometime in earth's non-specified future. Treat is offered 8 million dollars for reasons he cannot quite contemplate to journey to a distant planet where a manned exploratory vessel has found a planet that may support life. The vessel's crew sends several cryptic, partially intelligable messages back to earth, but then communications cease entirely. Treat's task, along with 3 fellow travellers, is to venture to the planet, find out what became of the explorers and their vessel, and report back.

--- Warning: partial plot spoilers here. Skip ahead if desired ---

To get to the distant planet, Treat's ship must pass through a wormhole, compressing a journey that would normally take years to just 10 months. However, upon arriving, the travelers eventually realize that they have travelled not just many lightyears from home, but also thousands of years into the future. They arrive at the planet not as it was when the first messages were sent back, but as it exists after hundreds of generations of people have lived and died since the first group of marooned humans arrived and began populating the place - almost like a cosmic Noah's ark. Like the first group of explorers, Treat and his companions find they've bought a one-way ticket. There is no way to get a message back to earth, and no way to return.

The novel takes us to two distinct civilizations of humans on the planet - those who chose to dwell beneath a gigantic dome in a rigid caste-like system, and those who split off to live outside the dome across an impassible desert in an Eden-like utopia. The novel chronicles the state of the decaying dome-dwellers' civilization, contrasted with the purity and ascendency of the utopian culture built by those outside the dome (the Fierri). An inevitable battle erupts as the two cultures that had remained separate for dozens of centuries poise to intersect once again, with Treat and his companions battling to prevent the repeat of a nuclear holocaust from the planet's distant past.

--- Plot spoilers over ---

It's a wonderful story that I thoroughly enjoyed, pitting the age-old ingredients of good against evil, while giving us numerous glimpses of what the world could be like if man would consistently choose good rather than evil.

My only critique is that some of the battle scenes are drawn out a little too long and this caused the story to bog down in places. Overall, the books come to a fine and highly satisfying conclusion. However, hard-core sci-fi fans who are looking for lots of cutting-edge science won't find it here. It's really a story of good and evil that simply uses science fantasy to carry us into a solar system thousands of years in the future where the age-old tale of hate and fear versus love and courage can carry itself out on a virgin planet. It's a story that could have just as easily been set thousands of years in the past as thousands of years in the future.

A superior story told well
By Kyle Pratt
Empyrion is an epic science fiction story by Christian writer Stephen Lawhead. Originally two books, The Search for Fierra and The Siege of Dome, the first book ends with too much unresolved and the second cannot stand on its own. The two books of this volume are in fact one story.

All too often Christian fiction is second-rate fiction but this is not the case with Stephen Lawhead and Empyrion. This story is excellent science fiction. However, Empyrion is not just the story of four travelers to an Earth colony in the Epsilon Eridani system; it is the spiritual journey that explores the eternal battle between good and evil.

While Empyrion investigates religious themes, it is not overtly Christian. Another reviewer stated that the story is rich with Allegory. I agree. Dome represents evil, an authoritarian society of demon worship and hate. Fierra, is a utopian paradise, a city populated by people who have either fled Dome or were thrown out. After years of wandering, they have come to know and love the Eternal Father. Even the air of Empyrion and Dome become allegories for purity and death.

The best fiction writers present their stories through setting, action, thoughts, and description. Many Science Fiction stories suffer from lengthy paragraphs of telling. While Empyrion does have some telling, it is blessed with ample setting details that allow you to visualize the alien environment, the bleakness of dome and beauty of Fierra.

As a Christian and a lifetime reader of Science Fiction, I recommend Empyrion to fans of the genre. Don't let the spirituality or length of the novel deter you from sharing the adventure.

Not for the simple minded
By Samuel Krikorian
Firstly, I should say that the omnibus version, containing both books, is available. It is humongous, but you can get it and save some cash. These books have a lot of depth to them and aren't the average sci-fi "lets see how many futuristic ways we can kill people" approach. Lawhead's character's are developed over time. Sometimes they will surprise you. The standard first chapter synopis of main characters is absent. You have to follow the development of the individuals throughout the books. Lawhead writes with a different sense of pace and buildup than you may be used to from his other series. I read this series as a kid and have always liked it for its uniqueness. The books create a believable world and a complex society while leaving the thinking reader plenty of mysterious clues and hints to ponder. Lots of fun elements of political science, anthropology and sociology undergird this first book, which takes place mostly in Dome. Don't expect everything to be spelled out right away, and don't expect wholesale slaughter and gigantic battle scenes. The great sci-fi epics like "Dune", and "Lord of the Rings" succeed because they give a reader a sense of reality. Events seem like real history. The "Dome" books don't reach the level of Herbert or Tolkien; few if any books do. However, they have an element of this same reality that allow the reader to become immersed and enter a new world and, after all, isnt that the point of sci-fi?

Okay cards
By SmartguyH
Okay. I thought this was a test prep type set. I got 3rd grade and I'll probably get 4th grade. It's a great review. I was intrigued by these at Barnes and Noble. From the two examples I was impressed, but looking at them now, I realize I have some of this already. A big chunk of the cards are multiplication flash cards 1-10s I think (excluding 11s and 12s? WHYYYYY)....

I'd SAY THERE ARE about 8 skills to work on. Place value (what's the place value of each digit in this number ____________? I liked that except this was beginning of the year and for your low students that are behind. This was really 2nd grade. 3rd grade is supposed to go to the 100 thousands, so I felt cheated on it. Perimeter and area, fractions (BASICCCCCCCCCCCCCC Seriously. A box with 3/4 shaded and you're asking what's the shaded part called? First grade I taught that skill. Time filler/confidence builder cards (to my group it's wasting time), I LOVE THE CARDS THAT SHOW expanded form via the bars and blocks. I guess they're called Base 10???? (cube =1s 10 cubes glued =10s 10 of those put together to look like a waffle= 100s. etc. I wish there were more of those cards. Great practice. I added on there what's the place value, spelling, and how to say it outloud.

Overall it was an okay set. Not worth the money, but I'm going to use this as a review center. I'd been doing Math Minutes (Daily Math kinda) and most of these questions pop up on those type of worksheets.

Each section does give a reteaching moment (definition of area/perimeter and examples)

I'm not sure I'll get 4th. We'll see. There are about 10 cards ish per section. Round to the nearest 10, 100, and 1000. Again I think that' 2nd grade not 3rd. This task is SUPER HARD FOR KIDS TO GET. I added more numbers on the last five cards of each group to show how you're only rounding the last two, three, or four numbers and keeping the rest. So, good visual for that...

An Assessment of the Science Proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), by Ad Hoc Committee to Assess t

According to the big bang theory, our Universe began in a state of unimaginably high energy and density, contained in a space of subatomic dimensions. At that time, unlike today, the fundamental forces of nature were presumably unified and the particles present were interacting at energies not attainable by present-day accelerators. Underground laboratories provide the conditions to investigate processes involving rare phenomena in matter and to detect the weak effects of highly elusive particles by replicating similar environments to those once harnessed during the earliest states of the Earth. These laboratories now appear to be the gateway to understanding the physics of the grand unification of the forces of nature.

Built to shield extremely sensitive detectors from the noise of their surroundings and the signals associated with cosmic rays, underground facilities have been established during the last 30 years at a number of sites worldwide. To date, the United States' efforts to develop such facilities have been modest and consist primarily of small underground laboratories. However, the U.S. underground community has pushed for larger underground facilities on the scale of major laboratories in other countries. An Assessment of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) addresses this matter by evaluating the major physics questions and experiments that could be explored with the proposed DUSEL. Measuring the potential impact, this assessment also examines the broader effects of the DUSEL in regards to education and public outreach, and evaluates the need associated with developing U.S. programs similar to science programs in other regions of the world.

Bizarre collection of words for ESL students
By Robert
This is a truly bizarre collection of vocabulary words. Apparently the creators thought it would be clever to group words under categories such as banking, travel, legal, etc. The result is terrible. I tried this out on an advanced ESL student and it was a disaster. Some of the words are completely inappropriate for ESL learning. Sample for a moment the following words just picked at random: "indicted, beneficiary, ordinance, net benefits, e-statements, volatile market, subpoena, procure, electorate, equity line" as just a sampling. Really???? These are the words you think Intermediate ESL students should be learning? The box is virtually worthless for beginners. I doubt much research went into this. Its a highly inappropriate collection of words -- neither academic nor practical.

Very Helpful ESL Resource
By Katherine
Excellent product for tutors working with students who want a business focus. The majority of the words are nouns and those commonly used in business. What is nice is the definitions and examples on the back of the cards and the identification of the classification (such as 'noun') on the front of the card as a hint on how to use the word. Well worth the money as I was making my own flash cards. II like how the cards are assembled from low to high reading level. This means the cards can be used sequentially as the student learns and advances or used at a higher level for more advanced students

Open Heart, by Elie Wiesel

Translated by Marion Wiesel

A profoundly and unexpectedly intimate, deeply affecting summing up of his life so far, from one of the most cherished moral voices of our time.

Eighty-two years old, facing emergency heart surgery and his own mortality, Elie Wiesel reflects back on his life. Emotions, images, faces and questions flash through his mind. His family before and during the unspeakable Event. The gifts of marriage and children and grandchildren that followed. In his writing, in his teaching, in his public life, has he done enough for memory and the survivors? His ongoing questioning of God—where has it led? Is there hope for mankind? The world’s tireless ambassador of tolerance and justice has given us this luminous account of hope and despair, an exploration of the love, regrets and abiding faith of a remarkable man.

Review
“A successful husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and writer, [Mr. Wiesel] is an asset to humankind. He has turned despondency into a message of approval and optimism…Mr. Wiesel packages equal parts beauty and astonishing description in an impossibly concise manner. Few authors have possessed such capacity for succinctness and brevity with magnificent dexterity.”
-NY Journal of Books

“An absorbing, clear-eyed reflection on [Wiesel’s] own mortality and a candid account of a life lived…Open Heart is Wiesel at his most vulnerable and his most determined, and his thoughts and ideas have never been so lucidly conveyed.”
-The Rumpus

“The reader…becomes a quiet observer of Wiesel’s thoughts, which are plagued by the question: ‘Am I ready to die?’ His answer, clearly, is no…What seems like a quick and easy read actually delves deeply into the philosophical and makes you wonder:  Will I be ready when it’s my time?”
—The Free Lance-Star

June 16, 2011.

“It’s your heart,” says the gastroenterologist after performing an endoscopy on me.

I am surprised: “Not my stomach?”

For some time now, acid reflux has been one of my nightmares. My longtime general practitioner also feels it has contributed to the various health problems that have afflicted me for the past several years.

My wife, Marion, and I have just returned from Jerusalem, where, every year, we spend the holiday of Shavuot with close friends. In keeping with the tradition to which I have remained faithful, friends and I spent the night in a yeshiva in the Old City studying biblical and Talmudic laws and commentaries dating from the Middle Ages.

This time, in Jerusalem, it had all gone well. No terrorist attacks. No border incidents. Even my cursed migraines seemed to respect the sanctity of this night, of this city unlike any other. But now, back in New York, suddenly my body revolts. The new piercing pain in my shoulders rises all the way to my jaw. I swallow a double dose of Nexium, the medicine I take for acid reflux. This time without success.

“No, neither the stomach nor the esophagus,” replies the doctor after a moment of silence. “It’s certainly the heart.” Ominous words, inducing fear and the promise of more pain. Or worse.

2

as soon as he receives his colleague’s message, my primary care doctor, a cardiologist, reaches me at home. On the phone, he appears to be out of breath; he speaks in a tense, emphatic voice, louder than usual. I have the feeling that he is trying to contain or even hide his nervousness, his concern. Clearly, he is unhappy to have to give me this bad news that will change so many things for me . . .

“I expected a different result,” he explains. “But now the situation requires some further tests immediately.”

“Yes?”

“Please come to Lenox Hill Hospital right away. I am already there.”

I protest: “Why? Because it’s the heart? Is it really that urgent? I have never had a problem with my heart. With my head, yes; my stomach too. And sometimes with my eyes. But the heart has left me in peace.”

At that, he explodes: “This conversation makes no sense. I am your cardiologist, for heaven’s sake! Please don’t argue with me! You must take a number of tests that can only be administered at the hospital. Come as quickly as you can! And take the emergency entrance!”

On occasion, I can be incredibly stupid and stubborn. And so I nevertheless steal two hours to go to my office. I have things to attend to. Appointments to cancel. Letters to sign. People to see—among others, a delegation of Iranian dissidents.

Strange, all this time I am not really worried, though by nature I am rather anxious and pessimistic. My heart does not beat faster. My breathing is normal. No pain. No premonitions. No warning. After all, hadn’t I just three days ago gone through a complete checkup with all kinds of tests, including a cardiogram, administered by my physician, the same one who is now ordering me to the hospital? There had been no indication of a coronary problem: no chest pain or feeling of oppression. What has changed so abruptly in my body to destabilize it to this extent?

All right, I’ll go to the hospital, since both doctors insist. I don’t take anything along. No books, no spare shirt, no toothbrush. Marion says she wants to accompany me. I try to discourage her. In vain.

3

a team of specialists is waiting for me in the emergency room. The very first blood test instantly reveals the gravity of my condition. There is a definite risk of heart attack. The doctors exchange incomprehensible comments in their own jargon. Their conclusion is quick, unambiguous and unanimous: An immediate procedure is required. There can be no delay.

Marion whispers in my ear that we are fortunate; she has just learned that the surgeon who will perform the angiogram is the one who operated on her two years earlier. I remember him, a handsome, strikingly intelligent man. I had been struck by his kindness as much as by his competence.

“I hope,” he tells me, “that we will be able to do for you what we succeeded in doing for your wife: to restore a normal flow of blood in the arteries by inserting a stent.” But then he adds, looking grave, “I must warn you that we may have to intervene in a more radical way. We will know very soon.”

I am drowsy and fight against sleep by trying to follow the brief professional exchanges in the operating room. Actually, I don’t understand a word. About an hour later, I hear the surgeon saying, “I am so sorry, I don’t have good news for you: Your condition is such that the insertion of a stent won’t suffice. You have five blocked arteries. You require open-heart surgery.”

I am shaken. Sure, I know that these days open-heart surgery is regularly performed the world over. Dr. Christiaan Barnard’s face appears before me; I had met the famous surgeon at a conference in Haifa and we had engaged in a long dialogue on medical ethics, comparing Judaic and Christian points of view. I had looked at his hands, wondering how many human beings owed them their survival.

But now the words “open-heart surgery” are meant for me. And they fill me with dread.

“You’re lucky. A colleague of mine, an expert in this type of surgery, is at the hospital right now. I have spoken to him. He is ready to operate on you.”

“Doctor,” I ask, “have you told my wife?”

“No, but I will do it right now.”

In a moment he is back: “I’ve seen Marion. As well as your son, Elisha.”

The fact that my beloved son is already at the hospital does not surprise me. Since his earliest childhood, he has always made me proud, always been there for me.

“What do they think?”

“They agree; we have no choice. But the decision is yours alone.”

“May I see them?”

Marion and Elisha are not good at hiding their anxiety. Their smiles seem forced. And how am I to hug them without falling apart? Marion, holding back her tears, tries to reassure me: “The doctors are optimistic. The surgeon they propose is world-renowned.”

“It will go well,” says Elisha. “I know it, Dad. I am convinced of it.”

I remain silent.

“Shall we go?” urges the attending physician.

The nurses are ready to push the gurney toward the OR. I steal another glance at the woman with whom I have shared my life for more than forty-two years. So many events, so many discoveries and projects, unite us. All we have done in life we have accomplished together. And now, one more experience.

As the door opens, I look one last time at our son, the fine young man who has justified—and continues to justify—my life and who endows it with meaning and a hereafter.

Through the tears that darken the future, a thought awakens a deeper concern, a deeper sorrow: Shall I see them again?

Elie Wiesel delivers a message of hope and tolerance in Open Heart.
By Charles S. Weinblatt
Elie Wiesel has produced many excellent works of fiction and nonfiction. Most of them are in whole or in part related to his experiences as a Holocaust survivor. Open Heart is very different.

This book is equal parts memoir, treatise, and affirmation of faith as Mr. Wiesel faces sudden death from cardiovascular disease and open heart surgery.

At age 82, in June of 2011, Wiesel is rushed to a hospital with severe coronary artery disease. He has several blocked arteries that only open-heart surgery can resolve. Suddenly faced with the prospect of death, Mr. Wiesel reflects upon his life, his experiences during the Holocaust, and his life since the Shoah.

As he is wheeled into the operating room, he reminisces about the terrifying agony of his imprisonment in the Holocaust, his survival, and the glorious wonders of life, love, family, and work left undone.

Mr. Wiesel comprehends the gravity of his abruptly serious health issue, which frightens his wife and son as much as himself. He gazes into his past, filled with trepidation, gloom, and death.

Virtually everyone he loved as a young man had been murdered by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. It was the darkest portion of his life and of humanity's existence. Unexpectedly he is once more threatened with losing everyone he loved.

A devout Jew, Mr. Wiesel wonders how God could allow millions of His children to become Holocaust victims. He considers, as had so many of his peers in Nazi death camps, how God could have turned away. Where is God, Elie Wiesel wonders? How could He abandon us? How could He allow so many generations of devout families to be murdered?

Admitting that there are no easy or swift answers to such questions, Mr. Wiesel proffers cryptic responses, such as, "It is not for us to decide how or why God acts." Or "God exists within the questions as well as the actions."

In the end, Mr. Wiesel can deliver no coherent meaning from the Holocaust. He seeks a different direction for salvation. During his recovery from heart surgery, his little grandson asks, "If I loved you more, would you be in less pain?" Mr. Wiesel realizes at that moment that "God is smiling as He contemplates His creation."

Mr. Wiesel proclaims he is part of a generation abandoned by God and betrayed by mankind. He reflects how humans have attained "perfection in cruelty." He wonders how humans could have attained such a dichotomy of normalcy, "for the killers, the torturers, it is normal, thus human, to act inhumanely. Should one therefore turn away from humanity?"

These ethical bombshells remain for the reader to scrutinize, while no logical conclusion is apparent from the author. He later resolves "It is up to each of us to choose between the violence of adults and the smiles of children, between the ugliness of hate and will to oppose it."

Speaking from experience, he tells us "even in darkness it is possible to create light and encourage compassion. It is possible to feel free inside a prison. Even in exile, friendship exists and can become an anchor. In one instant before dying, man remains immortal."

Mr. Wiesel believes in man in spite of man. He believes each of us can use words to wound or to console, to curse or to heal, to comprehend or disregard, just as "Illness may diminish me, but it will not destroy me." He proffers that, "the body is not eternal, but the idea of the soul is. The brain will be buried, but memory will survive it."

"Such is the miracle," is how Wiesel closes his thoughts. A tale of despair becomes a tale against despair. He finds singular beauty in the smile and love of his grandson that his misery over the Holocaust is diminished.

Yet what are we to believe about Holocaust survivors who have no loving family members? Can such despair be overcome when the survivor has no adoring grandchildren?

Elie Wiesel delivers a message of hope and tolerance in Open Heart. A successful husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and writer, he is an asset to humankind. He has turned despondency into a message of approval and optimism.

Mr. Wiesel packages equal parts beauty and astonishing description in an impossibly concise manner. Few authors have possessed such capacity for succinctness and brevity with magnificent dexterity.

At 82 and ill, Mr. Wiesel remains a powerful ambassador of tolerance and hope, for humanity will always require this message, a bright light in the darkness of despair, a signpost on humanity's road toward destruction and "turn to tolerance and survive."

This is Elie Wiesel's eternal message. We are each a spark of light in the darkness of destruction.

Reviewer Charles S. Weinblatt is the author of the popular Holocaust novel, "Jacob's Courage."

The Opening of a Heart
By doug
In this slight memoir focused on his cardiac event, "Open Heart," Elie Wiesel opens his heart which opens his soul and in turn his mind to his readers and students. With touching transparency and vulnerability, Wiesel reveals himself and the deeper inner dialogue with his life. His carefully chosen words and personal reflections invoke the preacher of Ecclesiastes, the conscience of Job, and the passions of Jeremiah. Wiesel's loyal readers and students savor his existential quests in his first memoir, and his novels and plays but all the more we celebrate the rich, instructive, and edifying teaching in this manner of communicating what matters in life; a communication so accessible, so real, so tender, and so profoundly personal. His writings will continue to invite humanity into ever more purposeful striving for justice and peace, for unconditional inclusion and the radical containment of hate, but "Open Heart" has a fresh, new cadence, a fresh, new intimacy, and a deeply personal summons to choose life and blessing, gratitude and love. The wake up that came from Wiesel's cardiac event is told in such a way as to awaken us to a conscious embrace and awareness of the lives we live. Thank you and bless you, Elie Wiesel. Doug Huneke

Eli Wiesel matured
By R. Hanna
As a former high school English teacher I had taught Wiesel's "Night" years ago. Also, I have tried to keep in touch with his growth and career. His confrontation of likely death is insightful and moving.
