Travel Guide Junkie
By J. Bryant
I purchased both the Frommer's and Fodor's guide to the Caribbean Ports of Call after already booking my criuse to the region. This book would have been more helpful before booking. It does a really good job of discussing the specifics about the different cruise lines, the departure ports and the ports of call. This guide would be beneficial in helping to make those decisions. Since I had already made these decisions, it only took me 45 minutes to read all the information about my selected ports. One reason I prefer Fodor's guides to other companies offerings is the Fodor's picks, I have been using them for 10+ years and they haven't pointed me wrong yet. One thing this guide lacked was reviews/recommendations of the excursions offered by the cruise companies.

Disappointing
By V. Soffel
I beg to differ from all the positive reviews, but this guide is not what I expected.
Having previously used the excellent Rick Steves' Mediterranean Cruise Ports for a Europe Cruise, the Fondor's Guide is a big letdown in comparison.
What I expect from a cruise guide is information on how I can get around on my own at ports of call - if I wanted to book the cruise ship's excursions I wouldn't need a guide book, would I?
This book has very little useful information in that regard. The book focuses on shortly describing a few highlights for each port on about 4..5 meager pages per port. You can get about
the same information by reading the cruise line's excursion descriptions.
One reason for me to go to the Caribbean is to dive and snorkel and again this book has no useful information. It lists a few dive operators but absolutely no information on where you can find good snorkel or dive sites. Just to give you an example on the "quality" of the information provided:
For Aruba it says under the heading "Diving and Snorkeling":
"With visibility of up to 90ft the waters around Aruba are excellent for snorkeling and diving. Advanced and novice divers alike will find plenty to occupy their time, as many of the most popular sites - including some interesting shipwrecks- are found in shallow waters ranging from 30 to 60 feet."
That's it!! No mention of where those "excellent sites" can be found at all. Note even a mention in the "Beaches" section which of those beaches may also be good for snorkeling. This is in my opinion useless garbage to fill the meager 4...5 pages of information provided on each cruise port with platitudes.
To top it off the books has serious errors which I found by only skimping through the book (I returned it the same day for a refund). For example Cartagena, Columbia, the overview map provided shows the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas smack in the middle of the old walled city, whereas in the real world this castle is across the laguna from the old city. Good luck, if based on this guide book, you try to walk there while being in the old city.
Too bad Rick Stevens has not written a book for Caribbean Ports of Call - it seems there is nothing on the market, which I find strange for such a popular destination. Even the dedicated dive/snorkel books for the Caribbean that I could find are hopelessly outdated (10..20 years old) or out of print.

Ports of Call - Caribbean
By glenaire93
This book gives excellent explainations of what to expect in these ports and extremely helpful pointers. We plan on utilizing before, during and possibly after our trip. Very easy to read and we believe will save us money and possible wasted time on vacation had we not had this book.
We would recommend to anyone going on a cruise to the Caribbean
