comprehensive, light to travel with
By reviewer
This is a compact little guidebook that carries a lot of useful information. How thoughtful of them to have a conversion chart from clothing size to weight and distance measurements on the front cover. The backcover includes a map for different postal districts, a detachable waterproof plastic map of London including the Tube map. The guide divides into sections of areas of London covering the tourist spots including admission prices, a brief history and maps sometimes. The section of where-to-eat is subdivided into restaurants in different areas. It has a brief section that have some hotel reviews. The Arts and Entertainment section is up to date, recommending some galleries and museum. What I find missing here is a calendar specifically for 2013 for London arts event, e.g. Frieze London. Shopping guide is adequate. A brief section on side trips, the uni's. Love the area maps and pictures.

A solid travel planning guide, and useful and convenient travel companion
By M. L. Asselin
The perfect travel guide would fit in your pocket and yet contain all the information you'd ever need or want. Perhaps you'd interject, you mean like having an iPhone app? Well, yes, but in an easily readable format with good maps that you wouldn't need to blow up on your tiny iPhone screen. I love my iPhone, don't get me wrong, but in this case what I could really use is a paper-thin, yet sturdy and flexible iPad Mini. And I bet I'll see one sooner than later.
In the world of wood-pulp travel guides, one has to pick and choose: a book geared to backpackers or one aimed at leisure travelers, a book that provides a little bit of information about nearly everything or says a lot about selected things, a book that makes decisions for you or delivers no judgments at all, a book slim with onion-skin paper or weighed down with glossy, full-color photos.
Complicating the selection process is the realization that the quality of a publisher's travel line may not be entirely consistent. For Asia, one may settle on Lonely Planet Guides only to discover that they may be less useful when it come to Continental Europe. With each country to be traveled, one is chagrined to find that the travel guide assessment process starts anew.
And so we find with guidebooks to London and England. The good news up front: "Fodor's Travel Intelligence London" is a really decent travel guide just compact enough (if still a bit cumbrous) to pack in your carry-on.
In planning a trip to London, one will have different needs at different stages: early on (Stage One, let's say), one will want to know what one needs to bring (e.g., a passport, what kinds of clothes), what sorts of transportation one will need, and at what places one might choose to stay. Later (Stage Two), one will want to have information about places to see, and how to get there. Finally (Stage Three), once there one will want help touring the sites and finding places to eat. Frommer's "London for Dummies" does a pretty good job with the initial planning. Lonely Planet Guides do very decently with Stage Two. Rick Steve's Guides, although highly opinionated and so perhaps off-putting for some, and the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides, however bulky, are particularly good at Stage Three.
All of these guides, of course, cover all three stages to varying degrees. But evaluating "Fodor's Travel Intelligence London" I think that, although it doesn't have everything I really need in a way I can easily find it--try to find a simple, clear explanation of how to buy and use an Oyster card or Travelcard, for instance--it overall rises above the guidebooks that excel in one of the three stages outlined above: it provides essential planning information, it delivers recommendations and salient information on places to go (though maybe not so good at how to get there), it displays a wide selection of information on hotels (it actually describes the UK's budget Premier Inn chain, which you won't often see in other guidebooks) and eateries, and it lays out site maps for prominent institutions like the British Museum (superior to Rick Steves's but not as plentiful as in the DK Eyewitness Guide). The book includes numerous clear maps and informed suggestions throughout.
The prospective London visitor who wants to make a day trip outside of the city may find it a challenge to get a London tour book that includes enough possibilities that one won't need to buy a separate book or books covering England. The best guide book in this regard is Frommer's "London for Dummies," which, in almost every other respect, falls considerably short. Alas, "Fodor's Travel Intelligence London" is quite lousy here, offering information only on Cambridge, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon (really?) and Windsor. Woe to the typical visitor who wants to see Stonehenge, Bath, or perhaps make a visit to Canterbury.
I highly recommend "Fodor's Travel Intelligence London" as a particularly good guide book to consult in planning your trip and then carrying along with you. But if you plan to make any side trips--and you should--then invest (sorry!) in a guidebook that covers England; here `Lonely Planet England" may be your best bet.

One of the World's Great Cities...
By HMS Warspite
Over the last few years, Fodor's has updated its traditional line of guide books to appeal to a readership raised in the digital age. "Fodor's 2013 Guide to London" is billed as travel intelligence. It still contains Fodor's excellent ratings system for attractions, hotels, and places to eat, but the text has been plussed up with photographs, maps, graphics and a more user-friendly packaging of information.
This Fodor's guide is close to a one-stop resource for planning a visit to the great City of London, with its cosmopolitan eight million person population, history, culture, art, shopping, and recreational opportunities. To paraphrase Samuel Johnson, a traveler who is tired of what London has to offer must be tired of life. The improvements added for the 2012 Olympic Games have only added to the appeal of the city, now that traffic patterns have more or less returned to normal. London is an expensive place to visit; time spent planning a visit may be rewarded in more ways than one.
The guide offers an introduction to London, followed by a survey of the city by neighborhood, highlighting the various attractions. Subsequent chapters focus on accomodations, dining, and items of special interest such as arts and entertainment, shopping, and side trips from London. Short features about London's long history are seeded throughout the text, which also contains a pull-out map and underground guide. The entries for individual attractions typically include websites and phone numbers for tracking down further information.
"Fodor's London 2013" is very highly recommended as an excellent travel planning resource.
