Outdated, confusing, and pretty terrible all around.

I'm in Beijing now and so frustrated with this book that I am writing my first review on Amazon. I usually use Lonely Planet books while traveling, but my copy of Lonely Planet China is old (I last visited in 2002), so I asked my sister to grab the newest travel guide she could find at the bookstore where she works. This was at the last minute, and she came home with this book the day before I was flying out. I did not crack open the book until yesterday when we went out to the Great Wall and Ming Tombs, but as most of our time was spent walking along the Great Wall, the book was not necessary. Today, however, we spent the entire day in the city trying to hit up as much as we could. We tried to use this book but had a number of problems:
The information in the book is outdated (the Simatai access point to the Great Wall has been closed for almost a year, the hours of operation for the Summer Palace are listed incorrectly, etc.) even though it says it was updated this year.
There are also at least 3 major errors in the Chinese guide in the back of the book ("I" is listed as "wi" instead of "wo", 3 is listed as "sen" instead of "san", and 8 is "be" instead of "ba").
The book separates the city of Beijing by district, but the maps to each district are not together or even within the pages listing places of interest within each district. Having separate maps for hotels, eateries, and tourist destinations is also not helpful at all (though they would be possible to use if they were right next to each other).
The National Museum is labeled on one of the maps but no information is listed. We tried to go on a Monday, which was a waste of time as the museum is closed on Mondays.
A subway map of Beijing would not have been difficult to include.
Hopefully the Xian portion will be easier to use; we'll be finding out the next few days.

World's worst travel guide

Do NOT buy this book! I am in China now, and this book is, as a childhood friend of mine used to say, "worse than useless." The authors did not include any actual Chinese words (that is, words written in Chinese), so you CANNOT show addresses to taxi drivers or other people in order to show them where you want to go. Instead, the authors chose just to use transliterations of Chinese without diacritic marks to show tones. So, for example, the book will give an address on "Zhenming Lu" (Zhenming Street). Please believe me when I say that this is useless. A taxi driver will have no idea where that is. He needs, first, the Chinese characters, or, failing that, a Pinyin rendering with TONE marks; and even the Pinyin is no real use unless you yourself can interpret them, which most people cannot do (I can't do it very well, to say the least, even when I have them). The fools who wrote this book (or edited it) apparently think everyone in China reads the nonsense in their book. Well, they don't, so this book will not help you get anywhere. Do NOT buy this book!
Also, I'd have to say that their notes on restaurants are just ridiculous. You go to China to see China and to eat Chinese food, but their restaurant recommendations are full of places that have American food, Italian food, Middle Eastern food, etc., instead of Chinese food. Of course, you can't find these restaurants, anyway, so it doesn't much matter, but still. With regard to the recommendations they do have, their ideas are equally absurd. For example, in the city I am in, they recommend that I go to a Japanese chain restaurant, even though I am in one of culinary capitals of the country with unbelievable seafood (as I have found, no thanks to this silly book). There are plenty of fine restaurants here, but you would not know it from Fodor's guide.
Their hotel recommendations are foolish, as well. In my city, they recommend the Asia Garden, a seedy brown brick pile, even though there are plenty of good hotels here.
I've traveled in 24 foreign countries and used various guidebooks. All have their strengths and weaknesses, but this one is undoubtedly the worst I've ever seen. I was in a hurry when I bought it but wish I had anything else.

I'm not satisfied with this because it is an older version and many things have changed since 2005 in China.
I thought I was buying a new book but this could hardly be called new as I understand Fodor publishes
their travel books every 1-2 years. I got fooled, but never again.
