From Library Journal
In the 1300s, it was considered an act of heresy to translate the Scriptures into a language ordinary people could understand. However, Thomas Torr is one who believes that it is vital for everybody to be able to read the Bible in order to profit fully from its teachings. Torr is therefore proud to help John Wycliffe translate the New Testament into English. Based on fact, this story combines elements of religious history with the qualities of a mainstream thriller, which makes for especially exciting reading. Cavanaugh (The Victors, Chariot Victor, 1998) is especially adept at blending a religious message subtly through the storyline, making its effect more profound.

From the Publisher
In Thomas Torr's time, it is considered treason to translate the Scriptures so that the common people can read them. Thus, when Thomas--an intellectually gifted orphan and ward of a humble farmer--assists John Wycliffe in translating the New Testament into English, he falls under the scrutiny of the Roman church. Offered the chance to make his case for the translation before the Vatican, Thomas accompanies Bishop William Pole to Rome. There, betrayal awaits him, and the beginnings of an incredible adventure. When the last translation he knows of is destroyed, Thomas barely escapes with his life. Hunted by the Roman church and by the evil Pole--a man whose dark secret makes him Thomas's mortal enemy--he returns to England, where further heartbreak awaits him. Felice, the daughter of Thomas's ward and Thomas's true love, has believed him to be dead. Turning for comfort to Kendall Bromley, son of a local official, Felice finds her friendship turning into attraction--and a romantic entanglement with the return of Thomas. Thrown together by fate, Thomas, Kendall, Felice, and Howel, Felice's father, find refuge with a gang of homeless rebels. The story builds to a dramatic climax as Howel is captured and faces execution at the hands of Bromley.

Cavanaugh = Great Historical Fiction
By Crystal Nielsen
I highly recommend "Glimpses of Truth" to anyone who 1) enjoys a good adventure, 2) likes a tender romance and 3) wants to understand why the Bible is a precious book.
Jack Cavanaugh is a master of historical fiction, bringing to life the people and places involved in major events long ago that still affect us today. One can practically smell the earthy grime of the village of Fearnleah, taste an elaborate dinner prepared for the bishop, hear the hubbub at the annual Christ's Mass celebration. But more than that, we are led through young Thomas Torr's spiritual odyssey in a way that leaves a permanent impression; one can never look at the Bible in the same way.
All in all, this first volume in the Book of Books series is a great read and difficult to put down. But that's the case with most anything written by Cavanaugh!

Eye Opening! Inspiring!
By Ken Boyd (keboyd@aol.com)
When I first looked at the description of this book I thought, "How could the english translation of the Bible be an interesting subject for a historial novel". After reading it I am in awe of the people who suffered and sacrified their lives to get the Bible into the hands of others. Seeing the scriptures, with all the hope they provided, for the first time must have been a life changing experience. I can't imagine not having my Bible to read freely. And this is exactly the picture Jack Cavanaugh creates in this book. The heart of the book is best illustrated in the statement "I'll be content with whatever glimpses of the truth he'll [God] allow me to keep." This book really makes you appreciate what a privaledge we have today. I can hardly wait until the next in the series. Please hurry Jack!

Life-changing
By A Customer
I will never look at my Bible the same way. Jack Cavanaugh writes a compelling tale of love and commitment, courage and compassion. In Glimpses of Truth, the tale of the English translation of God's Word is told in a stirring, heart-felt way. The book we take for granted can only be resting in our hands today because of the blood of others. Their strength of purpose, their love for God, their commitment to truth enables us to read God's word for ourselves, in our own language. Jack Cavanaugh brings home the ultimate truth that having God's Word isn't just a privilege, it's a heavenly right, and one we should never take for granted. Put this in your shopping cart. You won't be sorry you did.
